Hands down it beats the Shiner, Kostizter, and Rahr and Sons by a long shot. Still, not as good as say Schultheiss, but good. Rich chocolate flavor, deeply roasted malt and grain. All in all, quite enjoyable. mgoy (343), Oak Brook, Illinois, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Mar 26, 2008 Samuel Adams Black Lager is a very nice dark beer with a good but quickly disappearing mocha head. The aroma is rich with hints of caramel, chocolate and roasted malts. The flavor is full of dark roasted malt that is very quickly swallowed with a dry finish. unclemike (833), Ft. Riley, Kansas, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 13/20 | Mar 26, 2008 Bottle Pours a very dark brown, with a very nice thick and dense off white head with real lasting power. Impressive actually. Lots of thick sheeting lacing. Aromas of chocolate malts and slightly sour woody notes. Flavor is lightly roasted malts with hints of chocolate and old wood barrrels. Thin feel but smooth on the palette. Lively carbonation and slightly bitter trailer. A bit of a lightweight overall but quite tasty I thought.

| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Mar 25, 2008 A nice version of a dark lager. Pours brown from the bottle with little aroma but a strong roastines on the palate followed by a slight chocolate sweetness to finish. imdownthepub (5173), Banbury, Oxfordshire, England
| 2.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 4/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 2/5 | 9/20 | Mar 24, 2008 Bottled, pasteurised, 355ml. Dark brown with beige head. Sometimes I just cannot believ the high marks American beers get on this site and this is a case in poit. It really isn’t very good at all, a plain sweet chocolatey dunkel type of beer with very little character, a touch of roasted malt, but really not that good at all. If its not great don’t mark it high! hopson (595), Williamsville, New York, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Mar 24, 2008 bottle- enjoy the style, and found this to be a nice example. Nothing mind blowing. Some roastyness that almost came off a bit too smokey at first. thicker mouthfeel. Something I wouldn’t seek out, but its nice if its there. BOLTZ7555 (1107), Phoenix, Arizona, USA
| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 4/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Mar 23, 2008 Good session beer...deep leather body with small khaki head. The aroma is very subtle and somewhat sweet. Taste is all roasted malt, nut and a pinch of chocolate. Watery but drinkable. Average. jrmac (213), USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 3/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Mar 23, 2008 Beautiful lager! I am a big fan of Sam Adaams and this beer is another winner for the low cost specialty beer market. Nice roasted malt flavor with a great head. Only drawback is the lack of any real aroma. A slight hint of dark chocolate.
