Malty aroma. Medium body, actually a little lighter than I was expecting. Very malty flavor, chocolate and caramel came to mind immediately. I would prefer this over a heavier stout if I want the flavor of a stout but a light-bodied beer. One of my favorite Sam Adams, great beer. llcooldave (337), San Antonio, Texas, USA

I finally get to rate it: Nice dark black in color with a descent head and lacing. Light on the palate, not heavy at all. Smooth and drinkable, with a nice roasted coffee and chocolate aftertaste. I’ve tasted better Schwarts’ but this one is the one that kicked it off for me. Pwn3d (1087), Manhattan, New York, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Dec 27, 2007 12oz bottle. Im a big Schwartz fan and I was excited to pull this off the shelf. Pour lacked head, or any lacing... which is unusual bc almost everyone here commented on the nice head, so maybe something was wrong?? Aroma was familair malts and inviting. Taste was nice, very flavorful with roasted malts. yet the palate is watery and lacking. Good, but not great. YodaB (10), Massachusetts, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Dec 27, 2007 12 oz. bottle: This is one of my prefered Sam Adams brews. It is very dark with a chocolate and coffee taste to it. When I talk to people not up on beer terms, I tend to describe it as a lighter version of Guiness as I find that a lot of the flavors are very similar. Very drinkable. jredmond (1056), New Jersey, USA

This, however, I could not get my knob wet to. Roasty characteristics similar to a watered down porter. MBison (548), Southern Highlands, Australia

Poured a very dark maroonish colour, boarder lining on black with ruby highlights and a large creamy, tanned head which was mostly lasting. Aroma was mostly white milk chocolate, with light burnt malt notes and some coffee lollies in the back. Aroma was creamy and milky, with more notes of milky white chocolate and a very light burnt malt flavor. Body was medium with a creamy mouthful and an average finish. Simple but very well balanced. llbjr77 (72), Largo, Florida, USA
