| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jul 9, 2009 Black pour with a ruby tint, brown head that fades and nice lacing. Aroma of lightly roasted malts, some hop character and a touch of alcohol...odd for 4.9. Flavor is a coffee bitter. Medium bodied, good carbonation and clean. Refreshing, light and crisp...solid beer. Pawola22 (756), Kansas City, Missouri, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jul 3, 2009 12oz bottle. Pours a deep brown, almost black body with tints of red. Inch thick, dense and creamy, slowly dissipating, beige head that leaves a good amount of heavy lacing. Aroma is somewhat sweet with a light smoke. Even amount of caramels and chocolates with a bit of fruit. Flavor is semi-sweet caramels and light roasts up front before some milky, dark chocolate and smoke come in. Finishes with a light fruit and roasty chocolate. Slowly dries with a rich chocolate and roasty aftertaste that lingers for a good amount of time. Palate is medium bodied with a very clean balance. Overall, this was another Sam Adams beer that I had low expectations for, but it ended up surprising me. Nice flavor and very drinkable. beerfest5 (182), Simsbury, Connecticut, USA

| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 13/20 | Jun 16, 2009 Aroma is of roasted malts, subtleties of chocolate and caramel. Brew is a lovely shade of brown-black, opaque with a frothy, light-brown head. Flavor has medium bitterness with sweet undertones. Has medium body with average carbonation and smooth, creamy finish. Overall, very good brew that is reminicent of Guinness, but a little lighter on flavor and body. As with all Samuel Adams, this brew is worth a try. tmoreau (580), Lombard, Illinois, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Jun 14, 2009 Catching up on older notes. Enjoyed at the Midwest Longshot Regionals in Lisle, IL., a few weeks ago. A hotel water goblet sufficed and the bottle pour was black/brown with a light tan, foamy head and modest, foamy lacing. The aroma was roasted malt, a touch of caramel, some dry mocha notes, nuttiness and a hint of smoke and wood. The flavor added a suitable, light bitterness. The body was medium to light and very quaffable. My "during the breaks" beer while it lasted.
