My first introduction to black lager. It’s not bad beer, but with the sharper flavors from the dark malts, I’d rather stick to porter or stout and "let lager be lager."

Dec 28, 2009 12 oz bottle. Pour was dark brown with a small tan head. Nose is roasted malt, spicy hops with some coffee and chocolate notes. Medium to full smooth body. Flavors begin with sweet roasted malts, chocolate and some earthy hops, while finish is dry with coffee notes. Quite tasty beer from SA.

Dec 26, 2009 12 oz bottle served in a tulip. Pour was cola with three fingers of light tan head. Nose is roasted malt, caramel, chocolate, and a hint of earth. Taste is black liquorices, light caramel, and trademark lager characteristics. Kind of odd this brew, it tastes like the light, wet body/pallet of a lager, but somewhere threw in roasted malts and black liquorices. Not bad, but I can’t say I really like it either. Strange brew!

Dec 23, 2009 My mouth is filled with the flavor of coffee beans and chocolate malt. This beer has a very clear and defined roasted taste and aroma. Not my favorite, but it’s not a bad beer.

Nov 25, 2009 12oz bottle. Pours a very nice dark brown color with a lasting 2-finger beige head and some lacing. Aroma is roast, anise, chocolate, coffee, earth, and caramel. Flavor is nice with chocolate and caramel malts, substantial anise, roast, and a touch of earthy coffee. Long finish and a smooth mouthfeel with medium body. Nice offering from Boston Beer.

Nov 21, 2009 Moderate aroma featuring caramel, chocolate, and bread. Very deep red color; almost black. Pours a thin tan head which dissipates quickly with no lacing. Pleasant dark roasted malt flavor with just a hint of chocolate. Medium body with a thin texture and very light carbonation. A nice sessionable malty brew.

Nov 14, 2009 Dark brown, almost black but with strangely clear edges. A small off-white head that quickly settles into a ring of lacings.
Sweet malts in the nose, a light burnt sensation, toast, some coffee notes. Hints of grains.
The taste is mostly of sweet malts with notes of molasses and burnt caramel, coffee and a faint smoky note. Restrained fruity flavors. Quick hint of lemony hops. The finish is short and quite bland with mineral flavors, bread and grain.
Medium body, crisp carbonation. Not very exciting.
Not a bad beer, but certainly nothing exceptional.
