Commercial Description:
The blackberries we use in Samuel Adams® Blackberry Witbier are perfect for this brew. They deliver a subtle sweetness that balances the traditional citrus flavors from the witbier. The blackberries used in Samuel Adams Blackberry Witbier are sourced from family farms, located at the foot of the Oregon Trail and Cascade Mountains in Western Oregon, where they have been growing some of the best blackberries in the world for centuries. By bringing the blackberries, orange and coriander together with an appealing malt character and a spiciness from the hops, we’ve brewed a flavorful beer with a smooth finish that’s both sweet and tart. Samuel Adams® Blackberry Witbier is brewed with two-row Harrington and Metcalfe malted barley and generous portions of malted wheat. The malted barley and malted wheat provide the beer with its light body while the coriander and orange give the beer its citrus like aromas. We’ve also added some Oregon Marion blackberries, to give the brew a perfect balance between its subtly sweet and tart flavors.

Thanks kiefdog for the share. Pours a hazy straw gold with a nose of tart, hairy blackberry bushes, and some grass. Flavor is blackberry, bread, and a nice mellow sweetness. Not a bad wheat beer.

Bottle Pours a hazy golden color with an OK lacing head. Some kind of berry aroma. Light fruit notes...pleasant. Light tart and a hint of malt. Hint of caramel. Kind of light thought for a fruit beer. Interesting with the blackberries.

Sample at the Hopsnobbery Collective Barley Wine tasting on 03/14/2009: Trying this beer first was the equivalent of bringing a knife to a gun fight. The beer is a clear orange color with a thin off-white head that dissipates quickly. Thin sheet of lacing that slides down the glass quickly. Mild blackberry and coriander in the nose. Light body with tart blackberry and spice flavors along with a touch of malt. The finish is fruity with a short blackberry and malt aftertaste. Average overall.

Bottle pours a clear, pale orange color with a dense white foamy head. Good lacing along the glass. Mellow aroma of blackberry and wheat. Flavor is a nice mixture of sweetness from the blackberries, spiciness from the hops and coriander, and a back layer of malt. The aftertaste finishes with a slight dry tartness. An interesting fruit variety from Sam Adams.

A solid effort if so subtle as to be unnoteworthy and unnoticeable. If you handed me this beer and asked me identify the something special, I’d have no idea.

12oz bottle. Was initially concerned it would be too Smirnoff-like with too much fruit flavor. The blackberry flavor was a bit subdued, in a good way. Flavor had some bitterness with a hint of blueberry. thin mouth feel Enjoyed the first half of the bottle, afterwards flavor got old an lost it’s appeal. One was enough, just did fit my tastes.

Bottle. Poured a clear medium orange color. The head was two fingers high and off white with decent retention. I smelled the blackberry, but I might have guessed it was strawberry if I had not known which berry they used. There was also a whiff of cereal grain. I didn’t get much in the way of orange or coriander in the nose. Overall, the aroma was pleasant and reminiscent of flower blossom. Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Delicately tart and fruity up front. The blackberry flavor continued into the finish, but was somewhat medicine-like unfortunately. Soft caramel and toasted bread malts emerged in the middle and accompanied the fruit to the end. I would have never guessed the base beer was a wit. Not bad, but not something I would search for again.
