Commercial Description:
Samuel Adams® Boston Ale was first brewed to celebrate the opening of our Boston Brewery. Like Samuel Adams Boston Lager®, it was an old family recipe that was rescued by Jim Koch from his father’s attic. Samuel Adams® Boston Ale, a Stock Ale, has a complex, caramel malt character balanced with distinct spicy and herbal hop notes. Our proprietary ale yeast imparts a variety of fruit and ester notes in both the nose and flavor which are indicative of the style. Stock Ale, one of the few classic beer styles to have originated in the United States, has a strong New England heritage. The style draws its name from the cool "stock cellars" in which it was aged. This technique imparted a smoothness and body which became the hallmark of this style. Keeping with the Stock Ale style, Samuel Adams® Boston Ale is fermented at cooler almost lager like temperatures and conditioned much longer than most ales. It also is Krausened and dry hopped.

(Rating #2245)

Not bad. For Sam Adams. Tasted caramel malts, some hops but not much, just a well balanced, middle of the road brew. Nothing jumps out and wows you, but nothing makes you think bad thoughts either. I’d drink it again, but I doubt it’d be on my dollar.

Clear pumpkin color with a beige head. Aroma is pale and caramel malts with a kiss of sweet citrus, melon, and honey. Flavor is much less sweet, in fact it’s very neutral. Some lightly toasty malts are countered by an earthy hoppiness that leaves a very very slight bitterness on the finish. Tastes more English than American. Mouthfeel is great. Light and refreshing without being watery. Characterful enough to maintain interest.

12 oz. bottle. Pours a nice copper color with a one inch off white head. The head fades quickly leaving behind some lacing. I detect malt and earthy notes in the nose. It has medium carbonation with a medium mouthfeel, neither too sticky, nor too dry. My initial reaction is to an off metallic taste. A second taste lets me know the bittering hops are there, but I am not getting a whole lot. Some floral notes and a lingering bitterness are what strike my palate the most. This ale is okay, but there are far better examples waiting to be savored.

On tap. Malty aroma with plenty of hop scent. Nice deep clear brownish red. Slightly sweet malt with bitter hops in the back ground. Crisp and refreshing. A good easy drinking beer.
