Commercial Description:
Samuel Adams® Boston Ale was first brewed to celebrate the opening of our Boston Brewery. Like Samuel Adams Boston Lager®, it was an old family recipe that was rescued by Jim Koch from his father’s attic. Samuel Adams® Boston Ale, a Stock Ale, has a complex, caramel malt character balanced with distinct spicy and herbal hop notes. Our proprietary ale yeast imparts a variety of fruit and ester notes in both the nose and flavor which are indicative of the style. Stock Ale, one of the few classic beer styles to have originated in the United States, has a strong New England heritage. The style draws its name from the cool "stock cellars" in which it was aged. This technique imparted a smoothness and body which became the hallmark of this style. Keeping with the Stock Ale style, Samuel Adams® Boston Ale is fermented at cooler almost lager like temperatures and conditioned much longer than most ales. It also is Krausened and dry hopped.

Poured an amber color with a medium sized, off white head that left nice lacing on the glass. Aroma of toasted malts, toffee, citrus, and some caramel. Taste of citrus, toffee, metallic hops, and a dry finish. I hated this years ago, and just wanted to confirm that it sucked.

Another one of the affordable local options I often find in the fridge. It’s OK, not spectacular and isn’t made by Anheuser-Busch.

12 oz. bottle. Pours a thick white head of medium duration, with attractive lacing, over a clear coppery body.....nose is of mild hop and malts....tastes initially of mild but pleasant sweet malts then evolving into mild bitter finish. Mouthfeel is light. The malt backbone is somewhat simple for an amber.

Bottle: pours reddish, white head. Aromas of malt, bread, hops. Flavor begins malty sweetish, but rapidly degenerates into a not entirely nice bitterness. The bottom of the glass was almost undrinkable: the bitter was powerful and somewhat toe curling.

From a 12 oz bottle from the Variety Pack purchased from Costco, this poured a clear amber color with white head and average lacing rings. Nose of caramel malts and grassy hops. Medium mouthfeel. Flavor is typical amber with malts and hops in good supply. Bitter finish and as is all too typical of ambers not a real nice bitterness. This not my favorite style.

It was alright, but I wouldn’t put anything special to it... The aftertaste never sat well with me.

12oz bottle. Purs amber with a white head. Moderate carbonation. Head retention throughout the beer’s life. Aroma is of cheap beer malt, bread, carmel, and grass. Taste if of bread, toasty malt, grass, caramel, and fruit. Tastes bitter for all the wrong reasons. Not easy to drink, because it flat out sucks.

Pours a clear amber and orange color. Aroma is of brown sugar, plums and lightly roasted malts. Flavor is plentiful, with a nice roast and a slight sweetness. Very good.
