Commercial Description:
Samuel Adams® Boston Ale was first brewed to celebrate the opening of our Boston Brewery. Like Samuel Adams Boston Lager®, it was an old family recipe that was rescued by Jim Koch from his father’s attic. Samuel Adams® Boston Ale, a Stock Ale, has a complex, caramel malt character balanced with distinct spicy and herbal hop notes. Our proprietary ale yeast imparts a variety of fruit and ester notes in both the nose and flavor which are indicative of the style. Stock Ale, one of the few classic beer styles to have originated in the United States, has a strong New England heritage. The style draws its name from the cool "stock cellars" in which it was aged. This technique imparted a smoothness and body which became the hallmark of this style. Keeping with the Stock Ale style, Samuel Adams® Boston Ale is fermented at cooler almost lager like temperatures and conditioned much longer than most ales. It also is Krausened and dry hopped.

(On tap at Sam Adams Ale House in Atlanta Airport on October 20, 2008) Very clear... white head... typical Sam Adams aroma. May have hints of fruit, hops. Flavor is actually very... not there. Disappointing. A big chug reveals (other than a beer belch) nothing new. For something that’s so heavy it’s pretty boring. Not sure why I would want to drink this. A waste of gravity. Period. Nothing to see here... move along. Maybe I got a bad glass from the keg... may want to re-rate when I find this in a bottle.

Pours a golden orange color with a nice lingering frothy off-white head. Aroma is very sweet and malty. Caramel malts are dominant but there is a small hop backbone that helps keep it from seeming too sweet. Flavor starts out sweet and malty but quickly gains a bit of ripe fruitiness much like an English ale. Hops come through in the finish and lead to some nice bitterness that doesn’t linger too long. Medium body and moderate carbonation. A good ale but not great. It just doesn’t stand out from a huge selection of ales without much complexity.

Very clear copper orange with a two finger soft lumpy off white head that sticks around a while but not forever as fingers of lacing grab but then fall as well from the side of the glass. Aroma is mostly caramel with some herby/grassy zest. A bit toasty and more caramel flavors with a nice bitter hop finish.

Pours amber into a shaker. White micro head leaves no retention as it recedes to skim surface. Caramel malt aromas. Crisp and dry with caramel upfront and a medium lasting hop finish.

Golden amber color with a frothy white head. Sweet malty aroma with hints of caramel, spices and bread. Flavor is sweet and clean of toasty malt, caramel and some sweet dried fruit with a hint of light hop-bitternes in the finish.

Orange bodied with tones of light brown. Nose is mild. Flavor is hoppy with a touch of caramel sweetness and maybe a hint of chestnuts. Finish is somewhat long and is also bitter.

Clear amber pour with a foamy head. Aroma is mostly sweet toasty malt, with just a hint of spicy citrus hop. Flavor is big on the caramel malt as well. There is a good hoppy bite on the finish. Not too complex, but pretty good.
