Commercial Description:
Samuel Adams® Boston Ale was first brewed to celebrate the opening of our Boston Brewery. Like Samuel Adams Boston Lager®, it was an old family recipe that was rescued by Jim Koch from his father’s attic. Samuel Adams® Boston Ale, a Stock Ale, has a complex, caramel malt character balanced with distinct spicy and herbal hop notes. Our proprietary ale yeast imparts a variety of fruit and ester notes in both the nose and flavor which are indicative of the style. Stock Ale, one of the few classic beer styles to have originated in the United States, has a strong New England heritage. The style draws its name from the cool "stock cellars" in which it was aged. This technique imparted a smoothness and body which became the hallmark of this style. Keeping with the Stock Ale style, Samuel Adams® Boston Ale is fermented at cooler almost lager like temperatures and conditioned much longer than most ales. It also is Krausened and dry hopped.

Bottle: Poured a very nice golden brown color with a thick head that dissipated pretty fast. See lots of carbonation. Big scent of caramel. Big hop taste to it with a light undertone of caramel. Not bad.

This looks and smells pretty good. A "brassy" finish dulls it for me and renders it a step below Boston Lager. A nice, creamy head which sticks around. Certainly drinkable.

On tap @ Uno’s Tempe. Not a big fan of Sam Adams as it is, this beer solidified those feelings for me. Amber color with a slight off-white head. Aromas of malt and caramel. Flavor is malty with hints of caramel and hops. Fruity malty finish with some bitterness.

Not a bad beer. Gets better as you drink it. I’m not crazy about the aftertaste though. I can only describe it as "oily".

Bottle. Finally getting around to this! Too sweet, adjuncty aroma with slight orange ring and colored sugar. Light grainy caramel. Ruby-tinged copper pour, clear, with a soapy, rocky off-white head. Thin body is sweet and full of caramel and pale malt, has very faint bitterness mixed with some of the aromatic notes - corn maybe? Surely not rice. Light crispness persists. Slight herbal quality from the hops but not much else. Definitely drinkable, certainly by the pint, and I wouldn’t refuse one, AND leaps and bounds ahead of BMC, yet this just doesn’t stack up to the releases of the past five-six years. [Rating 1550]

Color is dark orange, a bit hazy. Head is thich and lacing quite nice. Aromas are tffee, caramel and malt. Malty flavor contains toffee, flowery malts with delicate metallic aftertaste. Beer is Light-medium -bodied and a little bit carbonated.

I had this on tap at SA in Boston. Reminds me of the Lager, but it has a more bitter flavor. Pours an amber color with a fair, but short lasting head. Good on tap. But not my fav. SA beer.
