Commercial Description:
Samuel Adams® Boston Ale was first brewed to celebrate the opening of our Boston Brewery. Like Samuel Adams Boston Lager®, it was an old family recipe that was rescued by Jim Koch from his father’s attic. Samuel Adams® Boston Ale, a Stock Ale, has a complex, caramel malt character balanced with distinct spicy and herbal hop notes. Our proprietary ale yeast imparts a variety of fruit and ester notes in both the nose and flavor which are indicative of the style. Stock Ale, one of the few classic beer styles to have originated in the United States, has a strong New England heritage. The style draws its name from the cool "stock cellars" in which it was aged. This technique imparted a smoothness and body which became the hallmark of this style. Keeping with the Stock Ale style, Samuel Adams® Boston Ale is fermented at cooler almost lager like temperatures and conditioned much longer than most ales. It also is Krausened and dry hopped.

Bottle. Amber/red color with a white head. Aroma of caramel, fruit, spices and mild hops. Tastes of fruit, toasty malt, caramel, light sourness and mild hop bitterness. Very smooth and easy to drink.

THOUGHTS: Sort of Brittish, but not quite. Not bad, but nothing special. Beasts a macro any day. The heavy carbonation makes it almost burn going down the throat. TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured a spakling, light to medium copper with an average-sized, foamy, slightly off-white head that mostly diminshed but left a thin sheet and left fair lacing. The aroma was moderate caramel, light perfume hops, toffee and honey. The initial flavor was moderately sweet with notes of caramel and toffe, while the finishw was moderately sweet and bitter, and sour switching to a itter hop and metallic copper taste (you know that sucking on pennies taste) with an average to long finish. The light to medium body was a little dry and chalky with very fizzy carbonation (a little too much) and a coppery metallic and chalky finish.

Has a hint of American hops and some caramel and light fruit but was otherwise uninspiring. Kind of watery in the finish, too.

Bottle. Big white head with good retention. Nice malt aroma. Easy on the palate with hints of caramel. A great session beer. Pound these all night! Better than the lager.

Bottle. Pours a light amber with a small weak head. A nice mix of hops and caramel malt. Smooth and refreshing, pretty good.
