Commercial Description:
Samuel Adams® Boston Ale was first brewed to celebrate the opening of our Boston Brewery. Like Samuel Adams Boston Lager®, it was an old family recipe that was rescued by Jim Koch from his father’s attic. Samuel Adams® Boston Ale, a Stock Ale, has a complex, caramel malt character balanced with distinct spicy and herbal hop notes. Our proprietary ale yeast imparts a variety of fruit and ester notes in both the nose and flavor which are indicative of the style. Stock Ale, one of the few classic beer styles to have originated in the United States, has a strong New England heritage. The style draws its name from the cool "stock cellars" in which it was aged. This technique imparted a smoothness and body which became the hallmark of this style. Keeping with the Stock Ale style, Samuel Adams® Boston Ale is fermented at cooler almost lager like temperatures and conditioned much longer than most ales. It also is Krausened and dry hopped.

A copper hue with a white head. A malty carmel aroma with hints of wheat. The taste is bland there are hints of caramel toasted malts and hops but that is pushing it.

Very carmel-y, with what seems like forced, harsh carbonation. It’s not a smooth mouthfeel like an English ale. Still, it’s tasty and does the brewer proud. Sam’s Boston Lager is the better beer.

From a 33ml bottle at Wermlands nation in lund. Nice hop bite is just enough to balance out the malt and add a crispness to the finish. Body is medium, but smooth and dry. Not my favorite SA style, but a good break from overly sweet Belgiums at a Lund nightclub.

Pretty nice-looking Amber pour with a thin and gradually diminishing head, but a let-down from there. Malty and grapefruity aroma. Somewhat hoppy, some malt, but pretty boring. Not one of my SA favorites.

Sept. 2005 - I have the EXACT same comments as Upstate Dave right below. The beer poured beautifully and smelled nice. I’m a big Amber Ale guy. The taste was nice a malty with a butter backbone...but the bitter aftertaste kind of put me off. Maybe it’s the type of hops used...but I wasn’t crazy about it. Yes, I still like this better than the Lager and most of the other SA offerings, but it’s not great. For a cheap ale, it isn’t bad, but there are better offerings for the style.

Bottle. Pours a lightly hazy golden amber with thin creamy white head. Aroma is lightly of white bread, faint apricot, hops, and mildew. Medium to light bodied, with fine carbonation. Flavor is fairly malty and moderately bitter with floral and spicy hopiness. Towards the end of the glass there were notes of citrus, fruits as well but only lightly. Finish is moderately bitter with some light metallic-tasting acidity that lingers on the tongue. Overall not a bad brew, has some interesting flavors but also some that are not entirely pleasant. I’ll not seek this one out again.
