Commercial Description:
Samuel Adams® Boston Ale was first brewed to celebrate the opening of our Boston Brewery. Like Samuel Adams Boston Lager®, it was an old family recipe that was rescued by Jim Koch from his father’s attic. Samuel Adams® Boston Ale, a Stock Ale, has a complex, caramel malt character balanced with distinct spicy and herbal hop notes. Our proprietary ale yeast imparts a variety of fruit and ester notes in both the nose and flavor which are indicative of the style. Stock Ale, one of the few classic beer styles to have originated in the United States, has a strong New England heritage. The style draws its name from the cool "stock cellars" in which it was aged. This technique imparted a smoothness and body which became the hallmark of this style. Keeping with the Stock Ale style, Samuel Adams® Boston Ale is fermented at cooler almost lager like temperatures and conditioned much longer than most ales. It also is Krausened and dry hopped.

Overall Impression: Out of the Sam Mixed packs that I use to buy all the time, this was always the one that didn’t quite work for me, it was always just missing something, can’t place exactly what, but something...

A copper/amberlike color with a thin head. A somewhat fruity aroma. A slight caramel taste with some spicy and hoppy notes. Well balanced taste. A really nice beer.

[Bottle] Pours a clear copper with a thin rocky head. Aroma was weak with just a little bit of grain and spice coming through. Taste was mostly grain and spice. Some fruit as well, maybe pear. Just a little bit of hops in the flavor but a lingering hoppy finish, reminds me of a pale ale. I prefer it to the lager, but overall nothing spectacular.

355 ml bottle. 4.8%. From Kiruna, Sweden. BBE APR09. Hazy reddish amber colour with thin white head. Aroma is fruity, sweet caramel and American style hops. Flavour goes the same direction. Bitter hoppy finish. Nice beer. It’s been one of my favourites for a long time.

Not a bad beer. Nice hoppy notes with a slightly metallic finish. Another above average while not being great submission from Sam Adams.

Pours deep amber with a foamy beige head. Aroma is earthy, fruit, nut, and some hop spice. Very smooth with a sweet taste then a mild hop finish.

The big-brother to the Lager. This has a bit more flavor, a bit more body. Nice roasty quality, yet still clean and a little bitter-metallic (as such the Lager is). Would prefer this TO the lager if I could get it instead :)

Bottle. Pours light reddish gold with a yellowish and very tall fluffy head. Aroma is fruity and malty. Taste is lightly hopped and malty caramel over a lager-ish base. Finish is fruity followed by hops and maybe even a bit spicy. Despite the myriad of flavors, its not terribly exciting, but certainly enjoyable. Its fairly light and goes down pretty easy.
