Commercial Description:
Samuel Adams Boston Lager® is the best example of the fundamental characteristics of a great beer, offering a full, rich flavor that is both balanced and complex. It is brewed using a decoction mash, a time consuming, traditional four vessel brewing process discarded by many contemporary brewers. This process brings forth a rich sweetness from the malt that makes it well worth the effort. Samuel Adams Boston Lager® also uses only the finest of ingredients including two row barley, as well as German Noble aroma hops. The exclusive use of two row barley not only imparts a full, smooth body but also gives the beer a wide spectrum of malt flavor ranging from slightly sweet to caramel to slightly roasted. The Noble hops varieties, Hallertau Mittelfruh and Tettnang Tettnanger, add a wide range of floral, piney and citrus notes, which are present from the aroma, through the flavor, to the lingering smooth finish. We take great pride in the Noble hops used in our beers. They are hand selected by Jim Koch and our other brewers from the world's oldest hops growing area. Among the world's most expensive, they cost twenty times as much as other hops.

Poured from bottle. Nice amber color with good head. The color does not do the flavor justice. You think you should be drinking something much darker. Very full flavor. Lots of malt. Nice bitterness. Overall very good.

Whoa am I backlogged on ratings! Smells lightly of noble hops. Pours a nice clear amber with 3/4 inch of white head. Flavor is light, smooth, little sweet, with noble hops bitterness, with a little bit of lingering hop bitterness Goes down easily, somewhat watery mouthfeel. Overall this is a fine refreshing beer that is easily quaffed, but is not huge on flavor.

This year’s batch seems to be exceptional. Although a slightly skunky aroma, it seems unusually malty for a lager, with very deep bready notes in addition to the usual club soda carbonation level. There is also a touch of lime and a bit of sliminess in here which may have more to do with the water quality; some of the other brews from Sammy have actually gone worse this year and I think it’s on account of the water. But this one is nicely balanced. It’s also really easy to drink.

Bottle. Pours a clear dark gold with a 2 finger thick white head with decent lacing. Nose is light hops and malt. Taste is pretty much the same. Medium mouth feel. I have had this many times but never took the time to rate it. Always a fall back when there is nothing else to order like at airports.. It’s good for what it is and the best one in their winter sampler.

Yellowish beer with heavy smells and tastes of mainly malt with a little bit of hop thrown it at the end for an attempt at balance. A little fruity as well with a crisp, bitter aftertaste.

A clear yellow/golden colored beer, with a thick white head. The aroma of sweet malt and fruits, there are hop tones. The taste is a little hop bitter, fresh malty and citrus. The aftertaste is enjoyable long bitter.

OK, so I have not had this beer for several years and I remember hating it. But then again that was before I enjoyed the taste of hops. So here goes. Poured from a bottle into a lager glass. Light amber body topped by a small and diminishing head. Some carbonation is noted floating its way up from the bottom of the glass. Smells of bready malt and a touch of spicy noble hops. Taste is very similar though hops are slightly more apparent, somewhat bland overall. Carbonation stings the tongue. It leaves behind some strands of lace. Finishes a tad sweet and it isnt too long before it is gone. I would have to say that I enjoyed this more now than I have in the past but it still would not make its way into my regular rotation.
