Commercial Description:
Samuel Adams Boston Lager® is the best example of the fundamental characteristics of a great beer, offering a full, rich flavor that is both balanced and complex. It is brewed using a decoction mash, a time consuming, traditional four vessel brewing process discarded by many contemporary brewers. This process brings forth a rich sweetness from the malt that makes it well worth the effort. Samuel Adams Boston Lager® also uses only the finest of ingredients including two row barley, as well as German Noble aroma hops. The exclusive use of two row barley not only imparts a full, smooth body but also gives the beer a wide spectrum of malt flavor ranging from slightly sweet to caramel to slightly roasted. The Noble hops varieties, Hallertau Mittelfruh and Tettnang Tettnanger, add a wide range of floral, piney and citrus notes, which are present from the aroma, through the flavor, to the lingering smooth finish. We take great pride in the Noble hops used in our beers. They are hand selected by Jim Koch and our other brewers from the world's oldest hops growing area. Among the world's most expensive, they cost twenty times as much as other hops.

Deep gold with a tall white head. malty fruit aroma, caramel malty and apple taste, with some pleasant bitterness from the hops in the taste and aftertaste.

On tap. Tasted during trip to california. Golden clear colour with a lance foam. Nearly no aroma just some of malt. A very nice lager taste but very common, not much bitterness just little that ends up dry. But very easydrinking lager with a maltet aftertaste.

Much better than I remember - decent hoppiness - buttery - respectable malt backbone - my go-to beer at places like applebees or fridays.

(12 oz bottle: Costco in San Diego, CA) Samuel Adams Lager was the first beer that pulled me away from macros, and so for that, I will be eternally grateful. But frankly, this is actually a pretty decent beer. This is why I can walk into any crappy bar in San Diego and still have a beer I not only can stomach, but can actually enjoy. Though slightly less flavorful than the Boston Ale and with less of a malt presence, this beer still shows a decent maltiness that is mildly sweet, somewhat bready and lightly grainy. There is a modest hop bitterness that balances the beer and adds a little snap to the flavor. Similarly, the nose is a nice balance of grainy malts and gentle hops aroma. Body is medium, the mouthfeel is nicely carbonated, and the palate clean and shows a decent crispness toward the finish. Light amber in color, seemingly clear, and topped by a light tan head that rises to an inch after the pour and settles to a thin, nearly complete layer. Lacing is plentiful, somewhere between Swiss cheese and spiderwebs. This beer is a great safety net, much like Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, something I know I can count on in desperate times, and given that the bars in Pacific Beach serve crappy macros, having Samuel Adams Lager on tap in just about every one of these beer-wasteland bar is critical. I’ll give +1 overall just for that!

Of the macro brews of america this one is probably the best. Not weak on aroma or taste like 95% of the commercial brews of the USA. Has a strong bitter finish.

The beer after disembarking from its 12 ounce brown bottle, takes up residence in my “pint pounder”, a transparent deep amber color with a bodacious creamy white head, the lace after desiccation of the head forms a tight girdle upon the glass. Nose is all sweet malt, fresh and pleasing to both the eye and the nose, start is thick with malt, sweet and the top middling in its feel to the palate. Finish has a brisk acidity, the hops pleasant and the aftertaste clean and wholesome, a quite nice beer actually, and one I’m afraid I forget about in my quest for the “Ultimate Beer” experience.

Orange-amber, tall head which lasts. Yeasty & hoppy nose, with caramel tones. Buttery amber malt flavor with zesty hopping. Clingy mouth, though I suspect that the palate has been enhanced deliberately with finings gel.

Understated, buttery, slightly hoppy aroma. Appearance on the other hand is absolutely perfect for a pale lager (not that pale, of course). Flavor is strong on the hops: grapefruit and other citrus, a little grass, though perhaps a bit too buttery. I have to give this beer two extra points because:

a) Boston Beer Co. is the only American Macro with the balls to actually put out real -- and good -- beer

and b) This was the first real American brewery I actually got in to, so I have to give all their brews a bonus point for that.
