Commercial Description:
Samuel Adams Boston Lager® is the best example of the fundamental characteristics of a great beer, offering a full, rich flavor that is both balanced and complex. It is brewed using a decoction mash, a time consuming, traditional four vessel brewing process discarded by many contemporary brewers. This process brings forth a rich sweetness from the malt that makes it well worth the effort. Samuel Adams Boston Lager® also uses only the finest of ingredients including two row barley, as well as German Noble aroma hops. The exclusive use of two row barley not only imparts a full, smooth body but also gives the beer a wide spectrum of malt flavor ranging from slightly sweet to caramel to slightly roasted. The Noble hops varieties, Hallertau Mittelfruh and Tettnang Tettnanger, add a wide range of floral, piney and citrus notes, which are present from the aroma, through the flavor, to the lingering smooth finish. We take great pride in the Noble hops used in our beers. They are hand selected by Jim Koch and our other brewers from the world's oldest hops growing area. Among the world's most expensive, they cost twenty times as much as other hops.

Understated, buttery, slightly hoppy aroma. Appearance on the other hand is absolutely perfect for a pale lager (not that pale, of course). Flavor is strong on the hops: grapefruit and other citrus, a little grass, though perhaps a bit too buttery. I have to give this beer two extra points because:

a) Boston Beer Co. is the only American Macro with the balls to actually put out real -- and good -- beer

and b) This was the first real American brewery I actually got in to, so I have to give all their brews a bonus point for that.

The beer after disembarking from its 12 ounce brown bottle, takes up residence in my “pint pounder”, a transparent deep amber color with a bodacious creamy white head, the lace after desiccation of the head forms a tight girdle upon the glass. Nose is all sweet malt, fresh and pleasing to both the eye and the nose, start is thick with malt, sweet and the top middling in its feel to the palate. Finish has a brisk acidity, the hops pleasant and the aftertaste clean and wholesome, a quite nice beer actually, and one I’m afraid I forget about in my quest for the “Ultimate Beer” experience.

Orange-amber, tall head which lasts. Yeasty & hoppy nose, with caramel tones. Buttery amber malt flavor with zesty hopping. Clingy mouth, though I suspect that the palate has been enhanced deliberately with finings gel.

Bottle. Copper coloured with an off-white head. Pretty good for a lager with some hop character and juicy malt flavours.

Draught at Cafe Blue Fish, Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
Disappearing white head, clear orange body. Nice and sweet hoppy, flowery and creamy aroma with toffee tones. Very flavorfull for a lager. Mostly hoppy with malty, fruity and a good spicy tone. An excellent lager.

[423-20070713] Bottle. Faint wheat and light alcoholic aroma. Golden orange-brown body with a long-lasting creamy off-white head. Medium alcohol and beery wheat flavour. Smooth medium body. Blended fairly well.

$1.29 12 oz. bottle from Total Wine in Kennesaw, Georgia. Appearance: Ah, BBC’s flagship brew! Pours a clear, copper body capped with a half inch of white foam. Fine, webby lacing on the way down. Smell: Toasty, caramel-scented malt nose with a spicy, floral background Taste: Toasted maltiness with a restrained caramel sweetness. Floral, lightly spicy Noble hops with a cleansing bitterness. Faint hint of fruit, particularly upon warming. Crisp, bittersweet finish. Mouthfeel: Medium-thin body. Medium carbonation. Drinkability: Enjoyed many times over many years in various forms, Samuel Adams Boston Lager is always a tasty, light, refreshing lager easily within reach be it at concert venues, humble gas stations, or the dreaded Red Lobster.

Never rated this, so seeing it on tap at the meager hospitality area at the San Francisco airport was good - one last rating on a liver punishing but awesome trip. Golden orange in my plastic cup, small white head. Very faint slight hops and sweet malt aroma. Mouthfeel is light and crisp. Sweet malt taste. Slight lingering bitterness. Like a flavourful Vienna and very much on par with Ontario’s Creemore. I enjoyed it, a nice surprise, was not expecting much.
