Commercial Description:
Samuel Adams Boston Lager® is the best example of the fundamental characteristics of a great beer, offering a full, rich flavor that is both balanced and complex. It is brewed using a decoction mash, a time consuming, traditional four vessel brewing process discarded by many contemporary brewers. This process brings forth a rich sweetness from the malt that makes it well worth the effort. Samuel Adams Boston Lager® also uses only the finest of ingredients including two row barley, as well as German Noble aroma hops. The exclusive use of two row barley not only imparts a full, smooth body but also gives the beer a wide spectrum of malt flavor ranging from slightly sweet to caramel to slightly roasted. The Noble hops varieties, Hallertau Mittelfruh and Tettnang Tettnanger, add a wide range of floral, piney and citrus notes, which are present from the aroma, through the flavor, to the lingering smooth finish. We take great pride in the Noble hops used in our beers. They are hand selected by Jim Koch and our other brewers from the world's oldest hops growing area. Among the world's most expensive, they cost twenty times as much as other hops.

Long overdue re-rate. Bottle. Aroma is light yeast and malt, decent caramel washes splashing by. Pale orange body with medium bubbles and soapy beige head. Dry, crisp taste on a medium body, caramel and pretzelly malt. Aftertaste is slightly adjunncty - a cause for concern, and akin to their Oktoberfest. Risibly overhyped - this is not the savior of the American beer industry; still, often the only viable choice in many bars.

This is one of those beers that finds its niche between macro swill (think Bud Light) and decent micros. It is quaffable but unimpressive. A decent brew, but not exceptional.

I anticipated trying this beer for quite some time, and just got around to tasting it tonight. Pours an amber colour, average head. Slightly hoppy aroma. Pleasant to drink, with a decent bitter finish.

Pretty golden color out of the bottle with a nice frothy head. The nose sets up both the malty sweetness and the hops to come. Clean and crisp beer with a noticable hop finish. Very refreshing, but drink it before it gets too warm. Good session beer. It gets extra points for being available in most bars as an alternative to BMC.

[draft at Max and Ermas - Moon Township, PA] Wonderful coppery color. Good hoppy taste that is not too overpowering and leaves just enough of an aftertaste to let you know you just drank a good lager.

I’m rewriting my review based on a fresh tasting - although the numerical score remains unchanged. Having been a long time since I had this beer, I was surprised at its nice fresh and salient hop flavor and aroma. There was also a good background bitterness, esp lingering in the aftertaste. At first the aftertaste was a bit harsh, but it mellowed nicely after several sips. Nice clean malt body - a little fruitiness and this would resemble a lightly hopped APA. (sampling was a very fresh draft)
