Commercial Description:
Samuel Adams Boston Lager® is the best example of the fundamental characteristics of a great beer, offering a full, rich flavor that is both balanced and complex. It is brewed using a decoction mash, a time consuming, traditional four vessel brewing process discarded by many contemporary brewers. This process brings forth a rich sweetness from the malt that makes it well worth the effort. Samuel Adams Boston Lager® also uses only the finest of ingredients including two row barley, as well as German Noble aroma hops. The exclusive use of two row barley not only imparts a full, smooth body but also gives the beer a wide spectrum of malt flavor ranging from slightly sweet to caramel to slightly roasted. The Noble hops varieties, Hallertau Mittelfruh and Tettnang Tettnanger, add a wide range of floral, piney and citrus notes, which are present from the aroma, through the flavor, to the lingering smooth finish. We take great pride in the Noble hops used in our beers. They are hand selected by Jim Koch and our other brewers from the world's oldest hops growing area. Among the world's most expensive, they cost twenty times as much as other hops.

The bottle & tap version were identical, some nice sweet tones that finished dry with the ever-so-light hop cameo appearance. They have changed the labels to more like every other big American brewery. I’d love to hear the strategy there!!!

Caramel malt aroma. Lightly hopped crystal malt palate. Amber lagerish just fairly mild. I don’t care for this as much as I used to but will still pick up a cheap 12er every once in a while or drink it in a bar where there’s no choice.

The bottle looks good, the beer in the glass also. Tastes very intense spicy, a little bit sweet. Finish also a little bit dry. Interesting and good beer.

12oz notched on Nov 2006. Poursa clear amber orange with a small-moderate eggshell head. Aroma is of light caramel and toasty malts, a little nuts and light spicy hops. Taste was much the same--these flavors are little more than subtle. Biscuity finish. Moderate carbonation, light-medium bodied. As a general beer, this would get a 2.5 or so rating. But rating according to style, it’s around a 3.1. Pretty decent for a macro.

Pours amber, with a medium, foamy white head. You can get some hops in the aroma, little malts, and some grain as well. Nothing special, but not offensive. The flavor has more of a hop character to it, with the malts, and maybe a touch of some light caramel coming through in the finish. This isnt bad if there really isnt much else available to drink. I chose it over Coors Light and Heineken where I was at. Which wasnt a hard choice.

Draft. I have to render unto this beer its props for being, usually, the best choice you have available in most restaurant bars <i color=CC0011>(and a fine Chicago pizza scarfin' establishment like Giordano's should know better than to use iced-over glasses). Has a nice dark gold color, darker than any megabrew, under the usual lager head. The malt is very evident, almost but not quite a caramel aspect, again better than megabrewed "barley pop." Hop flavor is nicely balanced, bitterness doesn't really assert itself until after you swallow. Many beer fans have kind of a love-hate relationship with Jim Koch, but this is still the beer that makes his rep.

So very middlin’...I enjoy these only if the other selections are somewhat sparse. Not a bad beer...I still enjoy them...but there are so many other ways to go.

While this beer may have been past it’s prime a little bit, I was still impressed with the overall quality of such a stupidly popular lager. I received a sixer from friends who didn’t like it. Aroma was fruity, with a bit of a zing. This continued in the flavor profile, with a good level of hops balancing a decent malt profile. Not a horrible lager.
