Commercial Description:
Samuel Adams Boston Lager® is the best example of the fundamental characteristics of a great beer, offering a full, rich flavor that is both balanced and complex. It is brewed using a decoction mash, a time consuming, traditional four vessel brewing process discarded by many contemporary brewers. This process brings forth a rich sweetness from the malt that makes it well worth the effort. Samuel Adams Boston Lager® also uses only the finest of ingredients including two row barley, as well as German Noble aroma hops. The exclusive use of two row barley not only imparts a full, smooth body but also gives the beer a wide spectrum of malt flavor ranging from slightly sweet to caramel to slightly roasted. The Noble hops varieties, Hallertau Mittelfruh and Tettnang Tettnanger, add a wide range of floral, piney and citrus notes, which are present from the aroma, through the flavor, to the lingering smooth finish. We take great pride in the Noble hops used in our beers. They are hand selected by Jim Koch and our other brewers from the world's oldest hops growing area. Among the world's most expensive, they cost twenty times as much as other hops.

Aroma of hop and biscuit. Deep golden color with a thin head. Starts with malt, then a honey sweetness?, and a little hop shows up. Beats Budweiser hands down. The malt really suppresses the hop, but it is detectable.

I have had this one a few more times. Much better than I remembered. Nice aroma of oranges and some light carrots. The body is nice amber. The taste has a decent bite of flowers and some orange peel. Fairly hoppy for a lager. This is a nice alternative to BMC.

Fair hop nose has some citrus and floral character to it. Clear gloden amber/light copper coloured body is topped by a finger of large-bubbled white head that recedes rapidly to lasting cover with lacing in rings. Citrus and floral hops are notable also in the flavour with some crisp bitterness and lightly toasted malt flavour. Cabbagey DMS emerges as it warms and becomes almost overwhelming. Crisp body and refreshing medium-light body feels good on the tongue. Bottle.

Among the first macro-micro beers available nationwide, once this brew had lots of character but sadly it has become the former shell of itself. That said, I have had and will continue to have these as I transverse through America's airports, on my way to another business/beer trip. That's what this beer has become, the American Airport Lager. Easy to drink, quickly if need be to make connection. Not offensive except for the cardboard lingering aftertaste. Quaffable.

I was pleasantly surprised and impressed at how full of flavour this is - a range of fruits cut through with a decent balance of bitterness and malty sweetness. There's enough going on to keep one interested to the end and then wanting some more to find out what other flavours can come through. A bit of tangerine marmalade and a hint of stawberries were among the flavours. The finish is long and complex and ends with a very dry bitterness that seems to go on for ever. [3.1]
Bottle. Head to Head with Brooklyn Lager. Amber with faint foam edge. Malty with sour fruit note. Some bitterness. Amber fog. Aroma of cardboard and old beer. Stale hops soon intrude heavily, spoiling this completely. Flavours muddy and not defined. [1.8]

Boston Beer Company’s flagship beer that got Jim Koch’s brewery started in 1984-1985. Pours an average caramel amber brew with a good thick, lumpy white head that dissolves slowly to a good lacing. Aroma of mild flowery hops, bubblegum, caramel, some citrus peel, and a touch of nutmeg. Taste is medium body sweet, and a sweet aftertaste. It’s a little different than what I remember back in 1990 but still has excellent qualilty character.
