Aroma was intensly malty and sweet but in a good way. Chocolate aroma was abundant. Flavor was a huge letdown. Much less impressive flavor than I expeceted. Roasted chocolate flavor was not that strong for a stout--this is no Rogue Shakespeare. Finish was bland roasted chocolate. Medicore at best and overrrated.

| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Dec 19, 2009 Bottle. Good aroma of roasted malt, chcolate and a Porter like sweetener on the nose. Black body with fizzy beige thin lid head. Good amount of creamy vanilla and chcolate. Roasty flavor present. That part of tasting like a sweet stout was little odd. Decent beer. edward_violet (17), Michigan, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Dec 17, 2009 Pours a deep deep brown, almost black. A moderate amount of off-white head.
Smells of sweet baked goods and dark malt.
Taste of light caramel, brown sugar. Hints of chocolate, coffee, raisin. Just a little bitter.
Smooth in mouth, slight yeasty aftertaste. Creamy. Soft carbonation.
Aftertaste might be more bitter than the beer itself. MrPickles (120), Wisconsin, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Dec 6, 2009 12 oz bottle. Passed on this way too many times, just because it was Sam Adams. Poured a deep dark brown, that appeared black. Aroma is sweet and malty with notes of chocolate, heavy cream, some hints of chocolate, roasted malts, slight spice. Flavor is malty and sweet with light roasted notes, and caramel, some candy sugar, hints of burnt toast and dark chocolate. Reminds me of coffee with no real coffee flavor. | 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Nov 22, 2009 12 ounce bottle. Gorgeous roasted malt aroma. Black but not opaque. A vigorous pour nets a full half inch head that lasts and laces nicely. Moderate body with a not quite full enough texture. Chocolate and caramel flavors balanced by a slight bitterness. Could stand a bit more carbonation but adequate as it is. Finishes surprisingly crisp. Worth it for the aroma alone. mabel (2626), Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Very dark brown black body with a small tan head. 3+ Modest aroma, light roast and dark roast malt. 6+ Flavour is similar, light roast malt, dark fruit undertones, dark malts 6+ Average palate is on the thin side for a stout. Pleasant, but a tad too sweet at times and a bit simple. Not bad though. Bottle from Premier Gourmet. dekeq (35), New Jersey, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Nov 2, 2009 Poured into my mug it produced a pretty nice, dark appearance. It let almost no light through and it had a very lasting head - even in the mug. It reminded me a little bit of Guinness. It had a bouquet of hops and the roasted scent of barley. There was also a slight hint of coffee or cappuccino. The taste started off very smooth, although it was a bitter beer. It followed through bitter as well with hints of coffee in the middle and end. It also leaves a coffee aftertaste leading me to believe coffee beans are in the brewing process somewhere. The texture was pretty smooth, but it was harsh at the end. It had the same flow of flavors and sensations as coffee
