Commercial Description:
Dunkelweizen translates into "dark wheat" and the beer is a darker version of the Bavarian wheat beers of the 15th century. Dark amber brown in color, this unfiltered ale is brewed with traditional Bavarian yeast, which imparts a wide spectrum of flavors and aromas from spicy clove and nutmeg to tropical fruit and banana. The result is a beer that is complex and flavorful, medium-bodied with a crisp finish.

Attractive dark amber cloudy appearance. Aroma is earthen and fruity. Unfiltered, with some tiny sediment visible. Solid wheat malt backbone with some nice fruitiness and prominent clove and other spices. Not as full of a body as I would hope for, which is the one knock against Sam Adams, compared to some of the other breweries out there that are willing to double the strength of their recipes and create a truly strong beer. (To their credit, Sam Adams did something akin to this with their Imperial Series). Anyway, the yeast gives this brew a pleasant aroma and refreshing flavor. Short but clean finish.

Pours a dark amber. Almost brown. Iced Tea is a good description of color. Average white head. Aroma is banana, nutmeg, raisin. The taste is what gets me, I didn’t think i would like this beer but it turned out to be surprisingly good. It has a slight sweetness and has some complexity despite it’s rather light flavor. Light body, soft carbonation and a short finish. Decent surprise from this beer. Nothing over the top but very drinkable.

Bottle - Pours a nice cloudy brown. Big frothy off white head. Aroma of bananas and cloves. Great presentation, but the weak flavor lets it down. Flavor is somewhat sweet with a little banana, but overall just too watery to be anything more then average. Had higher hopes for this brew. Will try again.

12 oz bottle. Pours a cloudy dark amber color with a small white head. It has the aroma of molasses, clove, wheat and yeast. Tastes of brown sugar, banana, nutmeg, clove and raisin. This is a wonderfully complex quality beer.

Bottle. Poured a medium brown in color with a small head that diminished rapidly with virtually no lacing. The aroma was that of cloves and raisins with the scent of grainy malts and an earthy yeast odor. It tasted a little acidic and sweet with a mild bitter aftertaste that only lasted a little while. Mouthfeel was smooth, dry and medium bodied. Overall a tasty but average brew.

Samuel Adams Dunkelweizen is a cloudy tawny beer with a thin, dense, off white head that has outstanding retention and lacing. It smells spicy and a little sweet, with notes of clove, pear and raisins. It’s medium bodied with a metallic feel. The finish is quick and a bit gritty. It has a mellow flavor of banana and pear, with a light, grassy bitterness. It seems like it will get sweet, but it doesn’t. The aftertaste is musky. It’s not bad.

Smooth and refreshing, but lacks complexity I look for in a traditional german beer. Aroma was weak, with hints of clove and malt. Smooth, yet a bit on the watery side.
