Commercial Description:
2005 info:This lager is made with fresh Bavarian hops, straight off the vines from the 2005 harvest in Germany, and packs an 8.8 percent alcohol content that's twice as strong as most popular beers.
Boston Beer Co. is brewing only 60,000 24-oz. bottles, which are due to begin arriving in stores in November.

2007 release info:
Yes, we're a little obsessed with hops. Every autumn for over twenty years, Jim Koch has traveled to one of the oldest hop-growing regions in the world, the Hallertau region of Bavaria in Germany, to hand-select Noble Bavarian hops, including the Hallertau Mittelfrueh variety. This special variety is considered to be one of the best in the world, prized for its unique taste and aroma. Samuel Adams® Hallertau Imperial Pilsner is a celebration of these extraordinary hops. This beer is one of the hoppiest in the world, without being overly bitter. With the first sip, you will experience an explosion of some of the world's finest hops. And we mean “explosion” in a good way. Brewed as a showcase for the hops, this bold brew highlights the spicy, citrus flavors and aromas of the Hallertau Mittelfrueh hops that are abundant in the recipe. The intense hops flavor is balanced with the slight sweetness from the malt. The brew remains pleasantly well-balanced from beginning to end, due to the quality of the hops, and continues to always be, well, "hoppy," providing hop lovers with an amazing beer drinking experience.
Available in 12oz. bottles.

This tastey beer pours a muddy orange colour with almost no head. Lots of carbonation, you see plenty of bubbles that continue to pop on the surface. It has a very strong hop aroma, as well as mint tea, leaves and bread. A very full citrusy mouthfeel with a nice tight hop bite that lingers on your tongue for a while. At almost 9% it leaves a nice buzz after the bottle is empty.

12oz bottle, from my own cellar, shared with 5 others at The Malthouse. Pours a murky gold with the brief appearance of a white head. Sweet fruity nose, reminiscent of pineapple, with a metalic and herbal note in behind. Some cardboard shows the age. Sweet pils malt up front, gives way to an intense herbal hop flavour and a hint of spice. Biting steely bitterness balances the sweet malt and alcohol. Full weighty mouthfeel. A little bit flat, lacking vitality. Pretty nice beer that is quite tired. Would love to give it a nudge fresh. Hop grins all around within minutes of sampling this - extra points for that.

Bottle from In Vino Veritas in Keswick, VA. Pours a hazy orange with a huge head. Great lacing. Spicy and woody hop aroma with some grain. Taste is spicy, ctirusy and woody hops. Some grainy sweetness. Very woody, spicy, almost like thyme has been added. This is an older bottle and I like it right now.

This is truly the best pilsner I’ve ever had. This beer almost has a perfect score in my book. A pilsner with such a hop character is to be at the least tried and loved but everyone. But some can’t handle the hoppiness of it. As for me, every area of judging gets two thumbs up from me. Thank you Samual Adams for this wonderful offering. The Lord bless your harvest.

Bottled. Very awesome hop aroma, smelled like a bottle full of hops. Very full bodied, like drinking syrup. Very bitter. Finish was alcoholic/astringent. The syrup mouthfeel turned me off to this one. Definitely not a session beer.

Bottle purchased at Will Bend Liquors (Lutz, FL) pours a cloudy golden yellow with a medium sized white head. Good lacing around the glass that lingers. Powerful aroma of piney hops with some citrus thrown in for good measure. If you really enjoy hops you’ll love the flavor of this one. It begins with a nice mixture of some malt sweetness, honey and citrus and finishes with an excellent dry hoppiness. The bitter aftertaste is wonderful! A very nice offering from Sam Adams! A must try for hop-heads.
