IEBAILI (123), San Diego, California, USA Dec 9, 2007 I can’t believe how hoppy this smells, in a fruity, west-coast style that screams ’American hops.’ I had no idea German hops could be so bright. Slightly murky golden orange color with a white frothy head that lasts a long time. Fruity, citrus, grapefruit, mandarin aroma. Delicious, IIPA like taste, heavy on grapefruit, with a little biscuity sweet malt. Alcohol isn’t noticeable, body is just full eneough to carry all the hops, beautiful beer, I’ll definitely drink again. dpjuart (670), Indiana, Pennsylvania, USA Dec 8, 2007 12 oz. bottle via trade with Acknud. Split w/ ’Naka. Pours cloudy golden amber with thick, foamy white head. Big old citrus hop smell. Wow. Great hoppiness. Decent malt sweetness, but a very big hoppy hop hoppiness. Citrus and floral notes. Bitter. By far, the very best offering that Sam Adams has put forth. Delicious. norsedoc (162), USA Dec 7, 2007 Pours a hazy orange with white head. Strong aroma of citrus and hops. Creamy, full mouthfeel with tastes of crisp orange, honey, caramel and maybe a hint of mint. Finish is long and hoppy. Like it says, hoppy without being overly bitter. LooseCannon (914), Norfolk, Virginia, USA Dec 7, 2007 12oz bottle labeled as Hallertau Imperial Pilsner. Pours cloudy golden color with full foamy white head. Aroma of citrus hops, hops and malt. Taste of lite malt, Hops and hops and more hops with a grapefruit bitter after taste. awaisanen (1279), Irvine, California, USA Dec 6, 2007 From a 12oz Bottle. Pours a slightly hazy, burnished gold color with a tall layer of pillowy white foam. Citrusy aromas of orange rind and lemon zest. Some fiery red pine adds some resinous hop characters as well. A modest caramel malt base is clearly noticeable in the background. Medium bodied, softly carbonated mouthfeel with a borderline creamy character. Sweet, bready pilsener malt up front, along with subtle caramel and honey. The hop flavors start growing after the initial palate sweetness shock, starting out with some garlicy notes and then growing increasingly bitter until it climaxes in a red pine explosion. This is easily one of the hoppiest beers I’ve ever tasted, and it certainly tastes like no Hallertau hops I’ve had before. I would say Summit and Amarillo if I were tasting this blind, so there must be some incredible hop utilization techniques going on to make Hallertau taste like this. This is actually too hoppy for me to really enjoy, and also a bit too heavy on the palate, but the flavors are clean and I have to give a cheer for the bold experiment. JorisPPattyn (5155), Antwerpen, Belgium Dec 6, 2007 Small, just yellowish head, dense, slightly irregular over slightly hazy orange-ochre beer. Dry hop bales, soap, C-hops (Hallertau Mittelfrueh, they said???), citrus. Dusty, slightly oxydized flavours (beer well within BBD range!), good pale malts, slightly toasted. Oxydized hops. Extremely well-bodied for a Pilsener, rather oily than slick. Very dry... Prematurely aged Pilsener (lightstruck?) Thanks, Dirk! wcampbell (572), Central, South Carolina, USA Dec 6, 2007 Updated: Jul 16, 2008Strong aroma of weed and pine trees. The taste is piney and hoppy but well balanced by sweet malt flavors. Similar to an imperial IPA. Well carbonated. No alcohol flavor. By far the best offering from Sam Adams. piscator34 (1121), Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada Dec 5, 2007 Bottled sample via oakbluff. Hazy orange in colour with moderate carbonation. Huge aromas of green grassy hops with some bread crusty pilsner malt lurking in the background. There’s a very minor alcohol note there too, but it’s hardly even worth mentioning. Oily and rich mouthfeel. Hop forward in the mouth as you’d expect from the aroma. With notes of cut grass, lemon rind, earth, and a bit of spice. The malts are there too, offering a slight hint of caramel, but more of a light french bread element. Solid peppery bitterness. Sort of the IIPA of the lager world. Excellent stuff!
