Commercial Description:
2005 info:This lager is made with fresh Bavarian hops, straight off the vines from the 2005 harvest in Germany, and packs an 8.8 percent alcohol content that's twice as strong as most popular beers.
Boston Beer Co. is brewing only 60,000 24-oz. bottles, which are due to begin arriving in stores in November.

2007 release info:
Yes, we're a little obsessed with hops. Every autumn for over twenty years, Jim Koch has traveled to one of the oldest hop-growing regions in the world, the Hallertau region of Bavaria in Germany, to hand-select Noble Bavarian hops, including the Hallertau Mittelfrueh variety. This special variety is considered to be one of the best in the world, prized for its unique taste and aroma. Samuel Adams® Hallertau Imperial Pilsner is a celebration of these extraordinary hops. This beer is one of the hoppiest in the world, without being overly bitter. With the first sip, you will experience an explosion of some of the world's finest hops. And we mean “explosion” in a good way. Brewed as a showcase for the hops, this bold brew highlights the spicy, citrus flavors and aromas of the Hallertau Mittelfrueh hops that are abundant in the recipe. The intense hops flavor is balanced with the slight sweetness from the malt. The brew remains pleasantly well-balanced from beginning to end, due to the quality of the hops, and continues to always be, well, "hoppy," providing hop lovers with an amazing beer drinking experience.
Available in 12oz. bottles.

2007 Bottle: Pours a hazy golden-orange color with a medium thick off-white head that dissipates slowly. Thick rings of lacing on the glass. Big Hallertau hops in the nose, coupled with some spices and citrus. Medium-bodied with a thoroughly hoppy character. Floral hops dominate with spice and yeast undertones. Malt shows up a little later as well. The finish remains bitterly hopped and leaves a lingering spicy hops aftertaste. Solid all around, as are many of Sam’s seasonals and specialty beers.

Aroma is citrus and piney hops, dark amber, medium sized cream head. Taste is strong orangey hops, soft malt in the background. Medium bodied, quite bitter, the neat thing about most overly hoppy beers with high abv is You don’t feel it? Very interesting for the style.

A few years back I brewed an imprial india pale lager, while it wasn’t as flavorful as this it struck a close resemblance. Pours pale orange, mildly cloudy, with a small white head. Big citrus hop aroma, pithy, like bitter grapefruit and chewing on orange peel in the aftertaste. Earthy and herbal along with the light caramel malts. The hops are overpowering, but in an enjoyable way.

It is exactly what it says it it - an ass-kicking Imperial Pilsner, a relatively new style that’s rather intriguing. This beer is wicked bitter and has a lot of punch for its color and light malt body. At 9% ABV, you can taste the alcohol. Enjoyed but wouldn’t seek this out as I’m not a fan of the style. Nevertheless, it was a quality brew that didn’t skimp on ingredients.

12-oz. Thanks, HogFodder! Pours beautiful cloudy dark amber with a thick, moussy off-white head. Big nutty, woody, lightly piney nose. Body’s definitely higher than merely medium, but not insanely thick. Active, tingly carb. Nice dense, swirling flavors right off the bat--heavy lemon, tobacco, leather, indiscriminate wood notes. Fairly clean resinous hop finish. Wonderful stuff.

Hazy and deep orange; frothy head with sticky, long-lasting lace. Lively carbonation; medium body; kind of chewy, especially toward the finish; the hops even seem to add some texture! Forest of hop flavors/aromas (glad to see the BBC still has it in ’em), which were earthy, wholesome, strong, acidic, grassy, citrusy (grapefruit) and tree-like (pine and spruce). Malts were wheaty-grainy, bready and toasty. Good beer. Surprisingly large balls on this puppy. RERATE, 2007: Wow. Tons of hop flavor. Like chewing on a Hallertau pellet. Large dose of flavor; aroma throughout; tame bitterness. Hop flavors and aromas just keep on keepin’ on, well after the swallow. Great stuff.

Hazy gold with a thin sticky head. Aroma is citrus hops, grass hops, and some bread like maltiness. Wow this is intensely hoppy. Bitter. Bitter. Bitter. But not over the top. Lots of pine, notes of grapefruit, earth, herbs...man! The slightest bready malt notes make an appearance, but this is hop dominated. Very dry, resiny, pungent. A little warmth, but for the most part the hops cover it up. This is hands down, the best Sam beer I have ever had.

Big thanks to Degarth giving me this brew. Pours a hazy deep gold with faint copper hue and lasting off white head. The aroma is light while still cold bringing forth mild sweetness, hop spice, floral hops and a hint of lemon. The flavor is full with a quick bite of spicy hop bitterness followed by sweet malt caramelization. The malts then get mildly toffee as the midway point is passed by and a building floral hop bitterness takes over the flavor. Into the finish more roasted malts, biscuit malt and mild toffee assume control of the flavor and carry it into the aftertaste.
