Commercial Description:
2005 info:This lager is made with fresh Bavarian hops, straight off the vines from the 2005 harvest in Germany, and packs an 8.8 percent alcohol content that's twice as strong as most popular beers.
Boston Beer Co. is brewing only 60,000 24-oz. bottles, which are due to begin arriving in stores in November.

2007 release info:
Yes, we're a little obsessed with hops. Every autumn for over twenty years, Jim Koch has traveled to one of the oldest hop-growing regions in the world, the Hallertau region of Bavaria in Germany, to hand-select Noble Bavarian hops, including the Hallertau Mittelfrueh variety. This special variety is considered to be one of the best in the world, prized for its unique taste and aroma. Samuel Adams® Hallertau Imperial Pilsner is a celebration of these extraordinary hops. This beer is one of the hoppiest in the world, without being overly bitter. With the first sip, you will experience an explosion of some of the world's finest hops. And we mean “explosion” in a good way. Brewed as a showcase for the hops, this bold brew highlights the spicy, citrus flavors and aromas of the Hallertau Mittelfrueh hops that are abundant in the recipe. The intense hops flavor is balanced with the slight sweetness from the malt. The brew remains pleasantly well-balanced from beginning to end, due to the quality of the hops, and continues to always be, well, "hoppy," providing hop lovers with an amazing beer drinking experience.
Available in 12oz. bottles.

Not all that impressive, perhaps because I’ve already had Rogue’s Morimoto. Poured a dark amber to brownish color with a decent head and adequate lacing. The aroma was certainly hoppy and of some caramel malts (the pilsner grassiness almost absent). The flavor was similar and somewhat like an IPA, lots of hops. The malt base was even a bit bitter (grapefruit rinds?). No idea why a beer like this (high 8.8 abv, lots of hops) is "best before jan 2006.

Pours with an orange body topped by a medium thick, white head with some lacing.  It’s bitter and hoppy with grassy notes and piney notes with a little pepper.  a slight sweetness shows through underneath.  Medium bodied, a touch dry and warming.

Cloudy amber body with a small off-white head. The aroma is a huge hop bonanza with a bit of peach and some of the strangled yeast barleywine fruitiness. The flavor has a pleasant bit of breadiness, but the bitterness is a bit too pronounced for this to be considered balanced. The alcohol is also a bit too pronounced with a noticeable heat and alcohol flavor up front. Not the best Imperial Pilsner.

A light orange golden color with a light head. This was a good beer. The aroma was light too light in my humble opinion. I did like the malt and the hops used hallertau are the lighest of all hops why these they ? Intresting flavor not my style but it was a good beer.

2007 vintage labeled as "Hallertau Imperial Pilsner". Semi-cloudy golden amber body. Fluffy white head with good retention. Nice sheets of lacing coat the glass. The aroma shows fresh, grassy hops over a buttery, toffee malt background. The flavor has a rich, buttery malt base. Decadent toffee and sharp, "green" tasting hops balance each other out very well. The rich flavors give way to a very long, bitter grassy finish. Medium-heavy body that is slightly sticky and cloying. Very nice beer. Solid effort from Sam Adams.

12oz bottle, 2007 vintage. pours dense golden-orange with creamy white head. a really big noble hop aroma, notes of citrus and leather. flavor is sweet citrusy, leathery, a very soft and delicate hop flavor a bit on the earthy and spicy side balanced nicely with a malt back bone that stays clean and refreshing. carbonation is very smooth. you can start to taste the sweetness of the alcohol a bit in this but otherwise its an awesome beer. from what i recall, the 2007 vintage is better than the 05. now, how about a great pilsner in a 6 pack?

This pours a golden honey color and is opaque. The thin white head disappears quickly. The flavor is bitter, it’s more of a dry bitter than a citric/piney bitter that you get from west coast IPAs. Finishes nicely
