Commercial Description:
2005 info:This lager is made with fresh Bavarian hops, straight off the vines from the 2005 harvest in Germany, and packs an 8.8 percent alcohol content that's twice as strong as most popular beers.
Boston Beer Co. is brewing only 60,000 24-oz. bottles, which are due to begin arriving in stores in November.

2007 release info:
Yes, we're a little obsessed with hops. Every autumn for over twenty years, Jim Koch has traveled to one of the oldest hop-growing regions in the world, the Hallertau region of Bavaria in Germany, to hand-select Noble Bavarian hops, including the Hallertau Mittelfrueh variety. This special variety is considered to be one of the best in the world, prized for its unique taste and aroma. Samuel Adams® Hallertau Imperial Pilsner is a celebration of these extraordinary hops. This beer is one of the hoppiest in the world, without being overly bitter. With the first sip, you will experience an explosion of some of the world's finest hops. And we mean “explosion” in a good way. Brewed as a showcase for the hops, this bold brew highlights the spicy, citrus flavors and aromas of the Hallertau Mittelfrueh hops that are abundant in the recipe. The intense hops flavor is balanced with the slight sweetness from the malt. The brew remains pleasantly well-balanced from beginning to end, due to the quality of the hops, and continues to always be, well, "hoppy," providing hop lovers with an amazing beer drinking experience.
Available in 12oz. bottles.

Cloudy deep blond color. Deep hoppy aroma, a bit sweaty and honeyish, and some fusel; light fruits too. Toffee flavor, with dry edges; strong bitterness, with dry resins. Unbalanced.

Beautiful hazy copper color. Powerful hoppy aroma, more resiny and fruity than expected. Strong body, with a strong caramel-toffee flavor and an extreme hopping; the hopping is quite resiny; compared to an IPA it has less body and less fruitness. Very good.

Clear golden with medium off white head. Hoppy nose with caramel notes. Sweet flavour with toasted malt, caramel and loads of hops. Bitter finish. I like pilsners like this!

(1/1/08, 12oz bottle, thanks Peregrinari) Cloudy apple cider body topped by medium, soft white head. Aroma is medium sweet, orange/spicy, light bread/caramel. Taste is medium sweet, orange/spicy, some grapefruit. Medium body, light crispness -- bigger than a pilsner, but not so overwhelming as is often the case for impy pils that it loses its pilsner characteristics. (7/4/8/4/15)

(01/07/06, 22oz bottle, best before 1/06) Cloudy amber body topped by big, rocky off-white head, nice lacing. Aroma is moderately sweet, orange, light cookie. Taste is medium sweet, grassy, orange, grapefruit, caramel, some alcohol. Resinous medium-full body. Not bad, but the alcohol presence, while not overwhelming, is too strong for the rest of the beer. Bottle from a trade with someone off RB. Very hazy orange gold with thick cream head. Big heavy sherbert green hop aroma. Big leafy hop aroma. I mean, wow. That is an intense hop experience. Difficult to say what the base beer is as it is just so strangled and dominated by the hop. Yeah, a really interesting beer. But seriously, just too many hops. It is a pilsner? No. I don’t know what to say. Yes, I love tons of hop, so yes, it brings a massive smile to my face. But as a balanced, well made beer? Just too much. Too hoppy? Yes.

Bottled 2007 release
Hazy orange color, very small white head. Bready hoppy aroma with hints of flowerness. Starts malty, then some bready pine needle hoppy flavors leading to bursts of hop juice in the finish. Long piney, hoppy aftertaste. Ok, it is technically pils, but flavor is more like the crossover of APA and IPA.

Bottle Vintage 2005. A hazy orangie beer with a small off-white head. The aroma is of sweet malt, hay, citrus and hops. The taste is dry, hoppy, salty, cough sirup in a good way, bitter taste. Medium body with a very dry and hoppy finish.

24oz bottle shared courtesy of TomDecapolis. Poured a medium and hazy amber color with a larger sized off white head. Aromas of grass, citrus and some caramel. Tastes of pretty much the same. This one was definitely hoppy.
