Commercial Description:
2005 info:This lager is made with fresh Bavarian hops, straight off the vines from the 2005 harvest in Germany, and packs an 8.8 percent alcohol content that's twice as strong as most popular beers.
Boston Beer Co. is brewing only 60,000 24-oz. bottles, which are due to begin arriving in stores in November.

2007 release info:
Yes, we're a little obsessed with hops. Every autumn for over twenty years, Jim Koch has traveled to one of the oldest hop-growing regions in the world, the Hallertau region of Bavaria in Germany, to hand-select Noble Bavarian hops, including the Hallertau Mittelfrueh variety. This special variety is considered to be one of the best in the world, prized for its unique taste and aroma. Samuel Adams® Hallertau Imperial Pilsner is a celebration of these extraordinary hops. This beer is one of the hoppiest in the world, without being overly bitter. With the first sip, you will experience an explosion of some of the world's finest hops. And we mean “explosion” in a good way. Brewed as a showcase for the hops, this bold brew highlights the spicy, citrus flavors and aromas of the Hallertau Mittelfrueh hops that are abundant in the recipe. The intense hops flavor is balanced with the slight sweetness from the malt. The brew remains pleasantly well-balanced from beginning to end, due to the quality of the hops, and continues to always be, well, "hoppy," providing hop lovers with an amazing beer drinking experience.
Available in 12oz. bottles.

Pine aroma. Cloudy light orange yellow. Initially taste is smooth for a nanosecond then a big wretched blast follows. As abrasive as any IPA I know. Chewing on grapefruit rinds is better than this. Quite an experience. If you love hops you gotta put this on your list to try. Nasty ill mannered brew. The mild carbonation is hidden by the offensive taste. One of the rudest lagers I have in memory.

Hazy orange color. Big bold hop aromas, slight malt hiddden beneath it. Flavor is just about all hops. Really enjoyable, building hop finish.

Cloudy dark orange pour in a lager glass. Big white nice head, with big hop aroma. Kind of grassy hops flavor with a thick gritty mouthfeel and an intense tree bark/chewed up aspirin tablet like bitterness. Too medicinal of a bitterness to be truly pleasant for me and killed an otherwise nice, unique beer.

I had been curious about this one for a while now. Sampled from a 24 oz brown bottle this beer poured a cloudy orange-golden color with a large orange-white head. The aroma is sweet and spicy and a bit earthy. Noticeable notes of grapefruit. The flavor is sweet and bitter fruits with elements of grapefruit and pine. There is a very strong hop presence on the finish that coats the tongue and lingers. The beer is a bit overwhelmingly bitter.

Hazy orange-copper in colour, lingering off-white head, good lacing. The aroma is quite hopped (both with orange citrus and also floral), good caramel sweetness. The flavour is also quite hoppy, some caramel sweetness, good malt balance. Very bitter mouthfeel, medium body, medium/high carbonation. Finishes very long and bitter. Hoppy but balanced.

24oz. bottle obtained in a trade with <a href=http://www.ratebeer.com/ViewUser.asp?U target=blank>OhioDad, thanks Scott. Best Before January 2006.

Pours a cloudy orange/red color. Aroma is somewhat sweet and hoppy. Smells more like an IPA than a pilsener. Lots of bitter elements in this beer. Some malt is present. Doesn’t really sem to have too many pilsner like qualities from what I can tell. Bitter finish. Some alcohol is present as well, just a little though. Tastes like a strong IPA to me. Not bad.

2005 24 oz. bottle via trade with hippie4beer (a little past its prime) here goes anyways - Pours a hazy golden color with a light head. Spotty lacing. Good carbonation. Has a grassy hop aroma. Flavor is bitter with some malt in the background. I noticed the alcohol when it hit my stomach. Medium body. Would have liked to tried this beer back in the early Spring. Still, a good beer. Thanks Seth
2007 12 oz. bottle from Plaza Liquors - Pours a slightly hazy golden color with a one and a half finger thick off white head. Has a nice herbal hop aroma. Flavor is loaded with hop bitterness with a little grain malt coming through. A very nice tasting Pils.

12oz bottle, 2007. Big nose of Bavarian hops, pine, citrus and earth. Poured an amber orange with an off white head. One of the better brews I’ve had from Sam Adams.
