Pours a murky, rusty, frankly unattractive mud color with a moderate off-white head that lasted through the last sip and left partial lacing on the glass. Very pleasant aroma of fresh citrus. The flavor is initially caramel with a smooth mouthfeel. This is quickly washed over with a resinous, but not overly bitter, pine flavor. As the beer warms a bit, the pine flavor is less dominant and more of the citrus flavor emerges. Dry on the palate at the finish, which lingers for another 10 or 15 seconds beyond the swallow. Well done by Samiel Adams! hophead75 (1964), Boonton, New Jersey, USA

Appearance is very similar to most IIPA’s- hazy orange in color with a sticky long lasting head that leaves perfect lacing on the glass. Aroma is a ton of floral german hops with some sweet pils and honey in the background, a touch of vanilla also. Taste is also a hell of alot of of Hallertau hops, with a nice tingly bitterness- body is quite full with grain and honey, also notes of vanilla and perhaps a tiny bit of diacetyl. Bitterness lingers nicely through the finish. very nice! Slick (1962), Thief River Falls, Minnesota, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Dec 31, 2005 Nice amber color with a small white head that faded quickly leaving just a little something behind.Ther was also a bit of some yeast suspended throughout the brew.Nice hop aroma with a bit of grapefruit and mild maltiness.Light malty flavor up front then it quickly changes to all hops and grapefruit with a slight piney effect going on in the middle and the end,and then finishes up with a nice medium bitterness. Not a bad brew at all, fairly smooth all though i would prefer a little more carbonation but it works quite well just the same. It’s worth another go around again. | 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jan 3, 2006 24 oz bottle-Man, this was quite a treat! pours slightly hazy orange with a nice soapy white head. At first wiff, a big note of sweet malts-reminds me of Bigfoot for some reason. Notes of apples, caramel, mild citrus, big grassy and spicy hops. really does smell like a hoppy barleywine. Big malt sweetness with a hugely resinous piney/spicy hop finish from those german hops. huge bitterness-big and resinous which dries out the mouth. Awesome beer-Well designed and very tasty. I really dig it and i hope SA makes more along the lines of this one. scraff (1955), Baltimore, Maryland, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Dec 14, 2005 Hazy turbid gold, thick off white head. Aroma blast of spicy grapefruit, sweet toffee, and caramel, with light peppery and earthy tones. Flavor was similar with fresh citrus, grass and spicy hop notes, with a soft nutty caramel undertone to aim for balance. Not quite, but this is supposed to be an ode to the hop. Full bodied, moderate carbonation, ultra dry, bitter hoppy finish. Pils, D-IPA, whatever. Might be one of the top beers ever made by Sam Adams. Very nice... fordest (1954), Santee/San Diego, California, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Mar 8, 2006 25 oz bottle. Cloudy orange color with a minimal head which still somehow hung around and left amazing lacing. Aromas were sweet with a citursy hoppiness. Vanilla and dried pineapple were mixed int there too. Maybe some Apricot. Flavor was amazing for a pilsner. Malty sweetness defintely came through. That Noble hop was so apparent it surprised me that I liked it. I would expect someting so hoppy to taste like an IPA, but it did an amazing job of maintaining that Pilsner quality. A very good Beer. phishpond417 (1953), Madison, Wisconsin, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Jun 17, 2008 This tastey beer pours a muddy orange colour with almost no head. Lots of carbonation, you see plenty of bubbles that continue to pop on the surface. It has a very strong hop aroma, as well as mint tea, leaves and bread. A very full citrusy mouthfeel with a nice tight hop bite that lingers on your tongue for a while. At almost 9% it leaves a nice buzz after the bottle is empty.
