Commercial Description:
2005 info:This lager is made with fresh Bavarian hops, straight off the vines from the 2005 harvest in Germany, and packs an 8.8 percent alcohol content that's twice as strong as most popular beers.
Boston Beer Co. is brewing only 60,000 24-oz. bottles, which are due to begin arriving in stores in November.

2007 release info:
Yes, we're a little obsessed with hops. Every autumn for over twenty years, Jim Koch has traveled to one of the oldest hop-growing regions in the world, the Hallertau region of Bavaria in Germany, to hand-select Noble Bavarian hops, including the Hallertau Mittelfrueh variety. This special variety is considered to be one of the best in the world, prized for its unique taste and aroma. Samuel Adams® Hallertau Imperial Pilsner is a celebration of these extraordinary hops. This beer is one of the hoppiest in the world, without being overly bitter. With the first sip, you will experience an explosion of some of the world's finest hops. And we mean “explosion” in a good way. Brewed as a showcase for the hops, this bold brew highlights the spicy, citrus flavors and aromas of the Hallertau Mittelfrueh hops that are abundant in the recipe. The intense hops flavor is balanced with the slight sweetness from the malt. The brew remains pleasantly well-balanced from beginning to end, due to the quality of the hops, and continues to always be, well, "hoppy," providing hop lovers with an amazing beer drinking experience.
Available in 12oz. bottles.

Golden yellow and hazy. Can you say some hops? Strong hoppiness in the aroma and taste. Not bad but not quite as special as I thought it could be.

Bottle, 2007, as "Hallertau Imperial Pilsner." Pours cloudy golden yellow with big, sticky white head. The aroma is hoppy and floral with some apricot and sweet cookie notes, too. The flavor is a toasty cookie sweetness, followed by an impressive burst of floral hops and some spiciness. It gets bitter as it moves through the mouth. The finish is earthy and dry, but somehow the aftertaste is sweet like honey and caramel. This beer is pretty impressive. I like.

Mostly translucent and glowing orange in color with a saliva spackle and dusty grey head at first pour. Consecutive pours yield a taller, fluffy head and sticky frapped milk lacing. Honeyed hops aroma, some cedar panels, pine combs, toffee, honey oat whole wheat bread and mildly sugared hot oatmeal. No musty sulfur in the nose. Didn’t know what to make of the first sip, but the second sip conjured up happy hoppy thoughts. Dry, hoppy, spicy, floral montage. Titillating grassy bitterness. You don’t find many beers hopped to kingdom come with Hallertauer, but this is proof positive that it can be done. Malt sweetening by way of caramel and toffee, imparting a slight barnyard barley flavor from the ample helpings of pils malt contributions. Bitter tongue scraper and thirst elicitor. Impeccably balanced, finishing with grassy fields, grapefruit enzyme and trailing whole grain sweetness. Encompassing, dry bitterness lingers long into the night. A nice, tasty surprise.

Wow! Pours a deep cloudy amber body with a puffy white head. Aroma is citrusy hops galore with hints of caramel. Flavor is the same, and gets a chewy in mouth feeling. Reminds me of an IPA without the whole Cascade thing going for it. Also this avoids the usual mass produced Sam Adams taste. Finishes bitter obviously. Alcohol is detectable but not enough to take away from what this is - a great beer. I was also worried that it would be horribly balanced with no malt backing, but there’s JUST enough to make it work. Definitely worth trying at least once.

Clear amber with a viscous white head. Nice spicy hop, pale lager yeast and malt aroma. Medium heavy body and smooth. Good flavor is sweet n spicy herbs, with heavy pale malts. Pretty damn good.

Once again, thanks to gputty. Pours darker amber/orange than most Imperial Pilsners, with a small head. Hoppy nose, with sweet malts. Taste is malty and somewhat citrusy. Fairly clean finish. Pretty nice!
