Commercial Description:
2005 info:This lager is made with fresh Bavarian hops, straight off the vines from the 2005 harvest in Germany, and packs an 8.8 percent alcohol content that's twice as strong as most popular beers.
Boston Beer Co. is brewing only 60,000 24-oz. bottles, which are due to begin arriving in stores in November.

2007 release info:
Yes, we're a little obsessed with hops. Every autumn for over twenty years, Jim Koch has traveled to one of the oldest hop-growing regions in the world, the Hallertau region of Bavaria in Germany, to hand-select Noble Bavarian hops, including the Hallertau Mittelfrueh variety. This special variety is considered to be one of the best in the world, prized for its unique taste and aroma. Samuel Adams® Hallertau Imperial Pilsner is a celebration of these extraordinary hops. This beer is one of the hoppiest in the world, without being overly bitter. With the first sip, you will experience an explosion of some of the world's finest hops. And we mean “explosion” in a good way. Brewed as a showcase for the hops, this bold brew highlights the spicy, citrus flavors and aromas of the Hallertau Mittelfrueh hops that are abundant in the recipe. The intense hops flavor is balanced with the slight sweetness from the malt. The brew remains pleasantly well-balanced from beginning to end, due to the quality of the hops, and continues to always be, well, "hoppy," providing hop lovers with an amazing beer drinking experience.
Available in 12oz. bottles.

Nice looking cloudy orange beer, almost a cross between a Hefe and an IPA. Very different than I remember it in past years, and I kind of dig the intensely bitter, almost acidic quality of the hops. It’s over the top, heedless of malts to some extent, and derives its character from just this single-mindedness. Pretty tasty.

[BOTTLED] Pours hazy amber with a firm head. Aroma is fruity apricots and hops. Thick, sweet and oily mouthfeel. Loads of hops in this one. Long intense bitterness with some notes of alcohol and salty liquorice.

Thick gold body, thin head. Grassy doughy nose with some yeast, slight lemon. Rich and sweet, not overly malty. Very well done doughy malt, bread, earthy/grassy hops.

Huge piney aroma and flavor. I’d say Pine-Sol all day long, but there is also a giant malt back bone that cuts the edge of the hops very nicely. Hugely sweet. Hugely bitter. Sticky. Resinous. A nice treat.

Hazy pale body with a large beige head. The aroma is heavy with floral, herbal and lightly grassy hallertau hops with notes of citrus fruits and malt sugars. The flavor is moderately sweet with tangerines, cotton candy, flowers and light dough. Medium body is round with moderate carbonation. Too sweet, but an impressive display of hops to be sure.

Bottle supplied by the man, Styles. Slightly hazy, coppery-orange color. Quite a nice white head forms in a dense 1/2" and gradually becomes more rocky as if fades to a scant layer and ring. Nice lacing is left behind. Medium bodied. Aroma is lightly earthy, full of noble hop goodness with bits of toasty malt also. Quite the hop forward beer. Ample bitterness stands out, salivary glands go into overdrive, enamel is lost. Quite nicely done. Thank you Sam Adams!

2005 22oz bottle. Unfiltered and a dull golden bronze. White swirling head. Strong citrus nose. Orange hop nose. Full with a sweet malty flavor. Notes of grapefruit and spices. Citrus and caramel. Sticky. Nice brew.

Bottle. Murky orange, wispy head. Aroma is fruity hops, cherries, doughy malts. Taste starts with a cherry, malty sweetness. Quickly takes a turn for the bitter, revealing some earthy German hops, although I swear they have used an American variety as well due to the fruitiness. Detectable alcohol. This beer is suprisingly like a barelywine due to the sweetness and fruitiness. If I’d had this blind, there’s no way I’d call it a pilsner, although the hops and the finish hint to lager. Strange stuff.
