Commercial Description:
2005 info:This lager is made with fresh Bavarian hops, straight off the vines from the 2005 harvest in Germany, and packs an 8.8 percent alcohol content that's twice as strong as most popular beers.
Boston Beer Co. is brewing only 60,000 24-oz. bottles, which are due to begin arriving in stores in November.

2007 release info:
Yes, we're a little obsessed with hops. Every autumn for over twenty years, Jim Koch has traveled to one of the oldest hop-growing regions in the world, the Hallertau region of Bavaria in Germany, to hand-select Noble Bavarian hops, including the Hallertau Mittelfrueh variety. This special variety is considered to be one of the best in the world, prized for its unique taste and aroma. Samuel Adams® Hallertau Imperial Pilsner is a celebration of these extraordinary hops. This beer is one of the hoppiest in the world, without being overly bitter. With the first sip, you will experience an explosion of some of the world's finest hops. And we mean “explosion” in a good way. Brewed as a showcase for the hops, this bold brew highlights the spicy, citrus flavors and aromas of the Hallertau Mittelfrueh hops that are abundant in the recipe. The intense hops flavor is balanced with the slight sweetness from the malt. The brew remains pleasantly well-balanced from beginning to end, due to the quality of the hops, and continues to always be, well, "hoppy," providing hop lovers with an amazing beer drinking experience.
Available in 12oz. bottles.

Bottle. Hazy amber body with a big stiff white head that leaves fantastic lacing. Vegetal, viney aroma with sweet muffin malt underneath. The aroma isn’t that great but the flavor is. More of that caramely, muffin malt but it’s just swamped by resnious wet grass / dandelion hops. Alcohol and bitter resins in the finish. I’m looking forward to the rest of this bottle!

Non transparent peach color. A nice earthy floral hop aroma, it reminds me of the aroma on some organic IPA’s. I get a very grainy body that has a delayed powerful bitterness to it. Could be the best thing sam adams has ever made, aka the opposite of tripple bock.

Sour, hoppy aroma. The hops I detected in the nose weren’t all that great. That’s the only subpar characteristic of this brew, however. Rich, murky, dark orange with an off-white head. Rich, high alcohol flavor that is very sweet and with a long finish. Wow! Imperial pilsner is a misnomer; this is no pilsner. Perhaps another example of a macro brewer trying to lure customers in with a marketing gimmic? The difference here is that the brew is outstanding. Believe me, this is much better than the 3.72 that folks are giving it. Macro bias is still alive and well.

Bottle (2007 release): Pours a cloudy bronze with a smaller white head. Thick lacing. Nose of floral and piney hops, some citrus sweetness. Taste is dominated with floral hops followed up by citrus into a dry and lingering bitters trailer. Has a spicy zest to it. Nice.

Bottle. Pours clear gold with a white head. The aroma is sweet juicy malt with fragrant hops. The flavor has a strong floral hop profile with a long hoppy finish. Very nice.

orange color, tan head, cloudy appearance. taste is hoppy and sweet with a slight alcohol burn. this was a pretty good beer, almost like chewing a beer instead of drinking it. this stuff is pretty thick. took me a little while to drink it. enjoyable, and pretty drinkable. much better than anything else ive had from bbc, and low and behold it actually doesnt taste like boston ale. good beer

bought after the flat tire fiasco: Pours a slight hazy golden yellow ... Pours with quite an impressive head, lacing is also very impressive ... wow, very bitter; not at all balanced and the alcohol is not really hidden at all... I like what Mr. Koch was trying to do and i did enjoy this brew to some extent but this is not what i was expecting.. its not a pilsener, its not an IPA, its not a IIPA , not even a high grade malt liquor but shows a bit from each category!

Light amber colour with minimal head. Thick oily body with light carbonation. Quite sweet and malty upfront and rich in texture. Flavour is slightly citrusy from the nice hop presence. Finishes rich and dense while struggling to mask the higher abv.
