Commercial Description:
2005 info:This lager is made with fresh Bavarian hops, straight off the vines from the 2005 harvest in Germany, and packs an 8.8 percent alcohol content that's twice as strong as most popular beers.
Boston Beer Co. is brewing only 60,000 24-oz. bottles, which are due to begin arriving in stores in November.

2007 release info:
Yes, we're a little obsessed with hops. Every autumn for over twenty years, Jim Koch has traveled to one of the oldest hop-growing regions in the world, the Hallertau region of Bavaria in Germany, to hand-select Noble Bavarian hops, including the Hallertau Mittelfrueh variety. This special variety is considered to be one of the best in the world, prized for its unique taste and aroma. Samuel Adams® Hallertau Imperial Pilsner is a celebration of these extraordinary hops. This beer is one of the hoppiest in the world, without being overly bitter. With the first sip, you will experience an explosion of some of the world's finest hops. And we mean “explosion” in a good way. Brewed as a showcase for the hops, this bold brew highlights the spicy, citrus flavors and aromas of the Hallertau Mittelfrueh hops that are abundant in the recipe. The intense hops flavor is balanced with the slight sweetness from the malt. The brew remains pleasantly well-balanced from beginning to end, due to the quality of the hops, and continues to always be, well, "hoppy," providing hop lovers with an amazing beer drinking experience.
Available in 12oz. bottles.

24oz bottle-pours a white head with hazy gold color. Aroma is light fruit, esters. Taste is oily, astringent and powerful hops, like a 2IPA. Nicely done but too big for my taste. 2.7 Hallertau Imperial Pilsner-12oz bottle-pours a big rich to rocky white head that laces and hazy gold color. Aroma is lots of perfumy hops, secondary grain. Taste is lots of perfumy/pine hops-some bitter, secondary grain/medium malt, somewhat slick mouth feel, alcohol. Finish is drying and bitter, nicely done, potent. OK carbonation. Thanks jwc 215 for sharing. 3.5

Cloudy golden-orange, lasting 1cm white cover. Strong hoppy nose displays a piney intensity that would make you swear they used American hops in there, but they claim they didn’t. Certainly interesting to try to acquire new perspectives in that regard, concentrated noble hops and done with tact despite the extreme nature and straightforward attitude. So, growing flower aromas that lead far more toward herbs than citrus with a rather earthy backing, bearing considerable sweetness from crystal malts and thus avoiding aggressive dryness or astringence (though it has a tobacco like throat rubbing aspect). Highly aromatic leafy salad, juicy hops. I find it nice how they recommend to drink before January 2006, really recommending to have it fresh for full experience, though this ought to cause problems to their retailers who will definitely have a lot left by then. Medium-full bodied, fading out carbonation, it leaves a certain gummy stickiness. Quite sweet if hoppy and aromatic, but this is worth seeking, whether you enjoy it or not. I’d say I did, if I don’t consider it a marking experience.

Bottle... Murky, deep golden lager with a mid-sized, creamy, off-white head. Excellent retention. Terrific, thick lacing. Spicy, malty nose with lots of black pepper, citrus fruit, bread dough and a hint of pricey perfume. Perfectly balanced with heavy, malty caramel and toffee. Spicy and heavily bitter, citrusy hops. Full-bodied and ultra creamy with medium carbonation. Lengthy, creamy, bitter finish. One of BBC’s best offerings. You go, Jim! ... call it what you want, it’s an Imperial IPA!

Hazy dark copper bronze pour has a nicely-lacing off-white head. Fresh hoppy aroma has some nice sweet pale malty balance. Body begins with a pleasantly sweet toasty maltiness and plenty of fresh European hoppy balance. Finishes crisp and hides the alcohol fairly well. A nice imperial pils.

Small, just yellowish head, dense, slightly irregular over slightly hazy orange-ochre beer. Dry hop bales, soap, C-hops (Hallertau Mittelfrueh, they said???), citrus. Dusty, slightly oxydized flavours (beer well within BBD range!), good pale malts, slightly toasted. Oxydized hops. Extremely well-bodied for a Pilsener, rather oily than slick. Very dry... Prematurely aged Pilsener (lightstruck?) Thanks, Dirk!

Vintage 2007. Bottled at Bishops Arms, Helsingborg. Amber coloured. Extremely hoppy aroma. Definately Hallertau. Fresh hop flavour. Very juicy and very bitter. Very unbalanced in a very pleasant way.

Any first impressions?
-Generous, huggable foam sticks over the cloud-filtered twilight.
-Booming pine and orangey perfumes soar through the foam summit.
-Gusty yeast swirls around the million pine needles and juicy oranges, a wildly beautiful expression of nature.
-Frothy carbonation and nutritious, creamy rye-like malts reward the climb to the heights of the forest.

What if you dig deeper?
-This isn’t the malt structure of a pils at all, but maybe that of a Double IPA. Then again, I’m not really on a mountain, am I?
-The earth under this dry wooden world complements its thriving.
-The peppery and resinous finishing hop bitterness isn’t too long or too short; it’s there just long enough for you to want to come back for another sip.
-There’s nothing like a slightly foggy northerly mountain in the morning.

How can you not be a nature lover after this?
-No idea at all.

Bottles; best before January ’06 and on tap at Willimantic Brewery in 2007.
