Commercial Description:
2005 info:This lager is made with fresh Bavarian hops, straight off the vines from the 2005 harvest in Germany, and packs an 8.8 percent alcohol content that's twice as strong as most popular beers.
Boston Beer Co. is brewing only 60,000 24-oz. bottles, which are due to begin arriving in stores in November.

2007 release info:
Yes, we're a little obsessed with hops. Every autumn for over twenty years, Jim Koch has traveled to one of the oldest hop-growing regions in the world, the Hallertau region of Bavaria in Germany, to hand-select Noble Bavarian hops, including the Hallertau Mittelfrueh variety. This special variety is considered to be one of the best in the world, prized for its unique taste and aroma. Samuel Adams® Hallertau Imperial Pilsner is a celebration of these extraordinary hops. This beer is one of the hoppiest in the world, without being overly bitter. With the first sip, you will experience an explosion of some of the world's finest hops. And we mean “explosion” in a good way. Brewed as a showcase for the hops, this bold brew highlights the spicy, citrus flavors and aromas of the Hallertau Mittelfrueh hops that are abundant in the recipe. The intense hops flavor is balanced with the slight sweetness from the malt. The brew remains pleasantly well-balanced from beginning to end, due to the quality of the hops, and continues to always be, well, "hoppy," providing hop lovers with an amazing beer drinking experience.
Available in 12oz. bottles.

12oz bottle. Hazy orange with a small white head that leaves some lasting foam. Nice, big, fruity hops in the nose with plenty of almost tropical notes. Hops and just more hops in the flavor. Quite strong citrus peel, with supporting malts that dont step on the hops at all, just provide a solid stage for them to stand on. Boston lager times two? medium-full body with medium-soft carbonation. This is quite tasty. Pretty much a DIPA, with a bit cleaner profile. By far the best sam adams that Ive had.

2007 bottle. Pours out golden and hazy with a thick white head. Aroma is big hoppy floral and a touch of pine. The aroma is slightly more floral and grapefruit than you would find on the SA lager. Taste is thick and malty with an extremely big mouthful of hops. A dry aftertaste leaves a little tang of bitter hops on the tongue. Very over the top for SA and I loved every bit of it.

Hazy golden orange, with a thin, persistent white head. Strong, hoppy nose of earthy, noble hops, floral perfume, lemon, caramel, some light pepper and a hint of warming alcohol. The body is pretty thick and sticky, not the light, crisp body of a pilsner. The flavor is malty sweet up front, with caramel, some dark fruit and some light alcohol. Toward the end, the strong hop character comes through toward the end and unleashes a strong amount of bitterness. Grass, lemon zest, earthy, peppery bitterness. The warming finish shows the strong alcohol. Not a terrible offering, but not that exciting. I would take Rogue’s IP or Rock Bottom Chicago 10th Anniversary IP over this any day. It’s good, but not great.

The color itself is magnificent. An opaque, deep burnt apricott. Somewhat of a Sauterne bouquet with the earthy acitone, and a hint of chared citrus malt. Pours a tall, dense head with good hangtime. Superb lacework consisting of a full silky canopy w/ a few islands and a full, fluffy ring. The palate is super full bodied, almost like jello. I get alot of flavors here. Malted citrus up front turns to caramel, creamed coffee, butterscotch, and leather. I caught a glimpse of smoke. It’s pretty hoppy and hides the alcohol well. With everything I’ve mentioned I have to certainly call this a very complex Pilsner, unlike any I’ve ever had. One thing I’ve noticed, you can swirl the brew into a thick lather down to the last drop. Overall: Intense, complex, thorough, and most definatley enjoyable. I got one bottle this vintage and can’t wait for the next. I highly recommend.

12 oz bottle from Discount Liquor, WI. Pours a hazed orange with a fluffy white head. Nose is really nice. Lots of hops. Pine, lemon, grain, grass. Light caramel sweet flavors balanced with the grass and pine hops that are quite drying in the finish. The grain was coming through a bit but maybe this was getting old. A pretty decent beer though, especially from Sam.

pours a hazy orange, with a thick sticky white head. aroma of ripe hops, touches of pine, floral hops. citrus, and a hint of mint? The flavor is extremely well balanced, lovely hops with a subtle sweetness from the malt. the 9% is nowhere to be found. Just a joy to drink.

Murky orange-light brown with a thick, white cover. Fresh, fresh, fresh hops aroma with some subtle malt aspects. Tangy/salty flavour at first, from the high hopping rate, which briefly clears to let through some pleasant malt flavours adn then comes back in a blast of hops flavour and bitterness that is not overpowering as one might expect from this sort of beer. Vanilla and non-diacetyl butterscotch notes. Almost a clean finish. Medium body and salty feel.

22 oz bomber. Pours an orange coppery color with a medium sized white head. Aroma is of floral hops, fresh yeast, and lemon citrus. Taste is hoppy with hints of lemon citrus, grapefruit and a slight touch of vanilla. Excellent pilsner, one of the best I’ve ever had and THE best beer to date from the Boston Brewing Company.
