Commercial Description:
2005 info:This lager is made with fresh Bavarian hops, straight off the vines from the 2005 harvest in Germany, and packs an 8.8 percent alcohol content that's twice as strong as most popular beers.
Boston Beer Co. is brewing only 60,000 24-oz. bottles, which are due to begin arriving in stores in November.

2007 release info:
Yes, we're a little obsessed with hops. Every autumn for over twenty years, Jim Koch has traveled to one of the oldest hop-growing regions in the world, the Hallertau region of Bavaria in Germany, to hand-select Noble Bavarian hops, including the Hallertau Mittelfrueh variety. This special variety is considered to be one of the best in the world, prized for its unique taste and aroma. Samuel Adams® Hallertau Imperial Pilsner is a celebration of these extraordinary hops. This beer is one of the hoppiest in the world, without being overly bitter. With the first sip, you will experience an explosion of some of the world's finest hops. And we mean “explosion” in a good way. Brewed as a showcase for the hops, this bold brew highlights the spicy, citrus flavors and aromas of the Hallertau Mittelfrueh hops that are abundant in the recipe. The intense hops flavor is balanced with the slight sweetness from the malt. The brew remains pleasantly well-balanced from beginning to end, due to the quality of the hops, and continues to always be, well, "hoppy," providing hop lovers with an amazing beer drinking experience.
Available in 12oz. bottles.

Bottle. Poured a clear copper/red color with a small white head. Aroma of spice and hops. Flavor is very hoppy, with a decent malt backing. Medium/full body with good carbonation and a creamy/sticky mouthfeel.

Bottle, from Julio’s. Good nose, bitter. Grassy, honey, little, whisky, grainy, like a hot barley cereal. Hazy reddish orange color, Nice head that faded slowly,. good lacing. Bitter flavors, sharp bitterness. Like aromas grassy grapefruit mainly. Thick body, especially for a pils. Cream mouthfeel. Very bitter finish. I’ve had about 6 of these before now. Call it what you want, but I think IPA when I have one of these. A really good beer. Jamaica Plain Sams rule.

Courtesy dsnowden. Hazy gold, 2cm white head. Aroma of fresh, floral, lightly spicy hops and lightly sweet, grainy malt. Flavor adds some resin to the hops and dusty, airy yeast. Medium body, balanced carbonation. Very nice, but too much yeast in the flavor.

12oz bottle into a pint glass. Good, not awesome. This is a style that gets kind of muddled when imperialized. Big malt taste with a fair amount of hops. Too sweet and the hops come across as bitter plants.

Bottle. Aroma of huge, sticky, floral hops, big toasted biscuit malt, some citrus. Flavor of all those sticky hops with the malt showing more earthiness, some tart fruits. Bitter finish. Lovely.

24 oz bottle, fresh November 2005: pours almost strangely dark brown apricot. Large, fluffy white head that plateaus and then diminishes leaving a patchwork of lace…sticky, resiny aroma of herbal hop cones, pine needles, floral citrus zest, and extremely fresh, almost raw grain. Alcohol and hop-sap essence creep up behind the initial bitter and earthy aroma. Satisfying hop and orange flesh flavours that don’t exactly bridge the gap to the overwhelming bitterness in the finish. Floral hop belches ensue. I enjoyed the flavour and texture of RB Chicago’s 10th Anniversary Imperial Pilsner I had recently much better than this, but applaud the effort and the ability to release a very solid beer at a very good price!

Bottle. 2007 vintage. Dry and dusty hops on the nose. Some biscuit and cookie malt notes as well. Seemed a tad off to me. Pours a nice cloudy peach/orange with a fairly creamy white head. Nice burst of citrusy and dry hops. Some nice creamy maltiness as well. Hint of peaches, apricots and orange peel as well. Creamy and mostly full bodied. Very nice effort for the Sam guys.
