Commercial Description:
2005 info:This lager is made with fresh Bavarian hops, straight off the vines from the 2005 harvest in Germany, and packs an 8.8 percent alcohol content that's twice as strong as most popular beers.
Boston Beer Co. is brewing only 60,000 24-oz. bottles, which are due to begin arriving in stores in November.

2007 release info:
Yes, we're a little obsessed with hops. Every autumn for over twenty years, Jim Koch has traveled to one of the oldest hop-growing regions in the world, the Hallertau region of Bavaria in Germany, to hand-select Noble Bavarian hops, including the Hallertau Mittelfrueh variety. This special variety is considered to be one of the best in the world, prized for its unique taste and aroma. Samuel Adams® Hallertau Imperial Pilsner is a celebration of these extraordinary hops. This beer is one of the hoppiest in the world, without being overly bitter. With the first sip, you will experience an explosion of some of the world's finest hops. And we mean “explosion” in a good way. Brewed as a showcase for the hops, this bold brew highlights the spicy, citrus flavors and aromas of the Hallertau Mittelfrueh hops that are abundant in the recipe. The intense hops flavor is balanced with the slight sweetness from the malt. The brew remains pleasantly well-balanced from beginning to end, due to the quality of the hops, and continues to always be, well, "hoppy," providing hop lovers with an amazing beer drinking experience.
Available in 12oz. bottles.

24oz bottle. Served in a 22oz lager glass at 54°. Pours copper with an orange tint and a 1/2", off-white head. The beer laces around the glass and the foam sticks to the sides. Aroma is sweet, grassy hops, caramel, and pears, maybe some lemon. The aroma is very strong and pretty darn good. The initial taste is honey followed by spicy, mildly earthy, mildly piney hops. This tastes like an american barleywine, lots of malt and lots of hops. The mouthfeel is substantial. The finish is moderately bitter, with earthy, piney hops and a small amount of alcohol, which is not detracting. This is a really good beer and although I was reluctant to buy it at first, I am glad that I did. If you enjoy the entire bottle, like I did, you should make sure you have no place to go. Well done, Sam Adams!

Pours a cloudy pale amber with a medium fluffy white head. Aroma is medium sweet with orange, spicy, light bread and faint caramel. Flavor is orange, spicy, grapefruit. Big time hops in this one, no doubt about that! Medium body, very crisp texture.

24 oz bottle: Hazy, medium amber w/ a lasting, medium, creamy, off white head. Floral and grassy hop aromas at first. Then a bit of "iced tea" hop aroma pops in and out. Alcohol is noticeable when it starts to warm and is a bit like rubbing alcohol. Then again, this is an 8.8% ABV pilsner beer. Malts are a bit grainy with hints of toastiness, but they are difinitely hiding behind the hops and alcohol. Well balanced for a big beer with a floral hop flavor and a clean bitterness that lingers into the herbal hop flavored aftertaste. Also a bit citrusy up front, and spicy hop mid palate. Very little malt flavor, but it’s lightly grainy and bready. They do become a bit more evident as it warms. The finish is a bit on the sweet side, but turns to bitter. Alcohol is very noticeable in the mouth. Not hot, but very warming and gives a drying feeling at the swallow, but smooth and creamy up until that point. Fuller bodied with low medium carbonation. Less grassy than Rogue’s attempt at an Imp Pils, but neither has an alcohol that is particularly well hidden which takes away from the overall performance of the beer. The hops are done really well. Floral, herbal, spicy, and citrusy notes all come into play at different intervals, as well as a clean, lingering, pleasant bitterness.

This was a nice pils...cloudy in appearance though yet very hoppy and refreshing. A nice beer.

One of the more impressive beers from Sam Adams. A large amount of head when poured...one of the best smelling beers I have come across. Good amount of hops but not over powering. I’m a fan.

Pours a hazy golden amber with a thin spattering of bubbles on top. Aroma is initially strong and spicy but subdues quickly to a mild, sweet maltiness. Nice! There’s an intense hop attack as soon as it hits the lips, which is quite pleasing. Mostly citrusy and spicy, with a lingering pepperiness. The hop assault is superbly balanced by a sweet, doughy malt character. Finish is dry and stinging with bitter hops. This is an exceptional beer!

If you want to know what Hallertau hops taste like, this is one of the best places to find out. They are there in abundance and they are front and center. I’m not sure what "An European Strong Lager" is but in this case it comes off as a cleanish IPA. Color is hazy golden w/ a nice head of small bubbles. Nose is laden w/ floral and fruity hops. Body is somewhat thin but w/ a nice cushion of carbonation to bolster it into OK-ness. Bitterness in the finish is not quite overbearing and on the spicy/earthy side. Not a bad offering at all.

24 oz. brown bottle. No freshness date seen, but 2005 seen on label. It has the neck tag also. $5.99 each at a local watering hole. Served in a tall Pilsener glass. Poured out a hazy, light copper color, with a voluminous white head. Aromas are of funky gym socks at first, along with some toe jam. Definitely funky. Yeasty sourdough bread, malts, and earthy funk round out the aromas. Flavors are of over the top hops, along with some dry notes, like saltine crackers. Malts are plentiful, as are more rounded notes only from a lager yeast. Some sourdough bread notes as well. Rich mouthfeel, strong hops bite at the end. A must try at least once beer.
