Commercial Description:
2005 info:This lager is made with fresh Bavarian hops, straight off the vines from the 2005 harvest in Germany, and packs an 8.8 percent alcohol content that's twice as strong as most popular beers.
Boston Beer Co. is brewing only 60,000 24-oz. bottles, which are due to begin arriving in stores in November.

2007 release info:
Yes, we're a little obsessed with hops. Every autumn for over twenty years, Jim Koch has traveled to one of the oldest hop-growing regions in the world, the Hallertau region of Bavaria in Germany, to hand-select Noble Bavarian hops, including the Hallertau Mittelfrueh variety. This special variety is considered to be one of the best in the world, prized for its unique taste and aroma. Samuel Adams® Hallertau Imperial Pilsner is a celebration of these extraordinary hops. This beer is one of the hoppiest in the world, without being overly bitter. With the first sip, you will experience an explosion of some of the world's finest hops. And we mean “explosion” in a good way. Brewed as a showcase for the hops, this bold brew highlights the spicy, citrus flavors and aromas of the Hallertau Mittelfrueh hops that are abundant in the recipe. The intense hops flavor is balanced with the slight sweetness from the malt. The brew remains pleasantly well-balanced from beginning to end, due to the quality of the hops, and continues to always be, well, "hoppy," providing hop lovers with an amazing beer drinking experience.
Available in 12oz. bottles.

Pours a golden orange with a nice white head. Aroma of hops, pine, malt. Flavor is thick sweet, bitter, grapefruity and piney. Initially it seems thick and sweet but immediately the bitterness kicks in. Interesting brew, glad to have tried it.

24 oz. brown bottle. No freshness date seen, but 2005 seen on label. It has the neck tag also. $5.99 each at a local watering hole. Served in a tall Pilsener glass. Poured out a hazy, light copper color, with a voluminous white head. Aromas are of funky gym socks at first, along with some toe jam. Definitely funky. Yeasty sourdough bread, malts, and earthy funk round out the aromas. Flavors are of over the top hops, along with some dry notes, like saltine crackers. Malts are plentiful, as are more rounded notes only from a lager yeast. Some sourdough bread notes as well. Rich mouthfeel, strong hops bite at the end. A must try at least once beer.

Location: Picked up a 12 oz. bottle at Gilly’s (Under the Hallertau alias)

Aroma: Hoppy scent, like a nice IPA, floral undertones, but the hoppiness dominates
Appearance: Nice cloudy, hazy orange color, thin white head
Flavor: Moderately to heavy bitterness with a relatively long lasting flavor.
Palate: Relatively full Body, Smooth aftertaste
Overall Impression: One of the few commercially available products from the founding father I haven’t had before. It was pretty darn good too, of course I am a big fan of hoppy beers. Really unlike any pils, more of an IPA style to it.

This beer is great. It looks like an IPA. It’ called a Pilsner. It’s rated as an european strong lager...??? This screams IPA to me. An excellent beer brewed by an average brewery. If you like a dry hop filled IPA, this is your beer.

Bottle. Pours a hazy orange with a large long lasting off-white head that leaves great lacing. Aroma of fresh Hallertau Mittelfrueh hops, and not your ordinary Hallertau hops. These have to be the absolute best hops of the crop because I dont even like Hallertau hops that much and the aroma is amazing. Taste is the same as aroma with a hint of fresh malt. Medium resiny mouthfeel with a strong but well balanced bitterness and perfect carbonation. The hops dominate this beer but because they are of such high quality it works beautifully. Amazing.

Thick cloudy amber color with a tall soapy head. Powerful aroma of hops with excellent lacing. Lots of hops in the taste. Bitter but with a nice sweet balance. Best Sam Adams I’ve ever had.

9-26-07 bottle. Very hoppy aroma - nice. Thick orangish gold color - slightly hazy. Great head. Very drying on the mouth - sucks all the moisture out. Very soapy taste left in the mouth. Tree bark bitterness - quite earhty.
