Commercial Description:
2005 info:This lager is made with fresh Bavarian hops, straight off the vines from the 2005 harvest in Germany, and packs an 8.8 percent alcohol content that's twice as strong as most popular beers.
Boston Beer Co. is brewing only 60,000 24-oz. bottles, which are due to begin arriving in stores in November.

2007 release info:
Yes, we're a little obsessed with hops. Every autumn for over twenty years, Jim Koch has traveled to one of the oldest hop-growing regions in the world, the Hallertau region of Bavaria in Germany, to hand-select Noble Bavarian hops, including the Hallertau Mittelfrueh variety. This special variety is considered to be one of the best in the world, prized for its unique taste and aroma. Samuel Adams® Hallertau Imperial Pilsner is a celebration of these extraordinary hops. This beer is one of the hoppiest in the world, without being overly bitter. With the first sip, you will experience an explosion of some of the world's finest hops. And we mean “explosion” in a good way. Brewed as a showcase for the hops, this bold brew highlights the spicy, citrus flavors and aromas of the Hallertau Mittelfrueh hops that are abundant in the recipe. The intense hops flavor is balanced with the slight sweetness from the malt. The brew remains pleasantly well-balanced from beginning to end, due to the quality of the hops, and continues to always be, well, "hoppy," providing hop lovers with an amazing beer drinking experience.
Available in 12oz. bottles.

This one wasted my tongue. This is Hallertau hop city baby - the aroma is giant - grassy, lemony and beery with some fruit sweetness. More pine needle, bitter goodness throughout the body, which lets just enough candy malt through to balance this beast. The bittering hops just scrape the taste buds off the tongue - I will be tasting this all night, long after the last drop. This is refreshing to say the least.

Its been a long time since I’ve had a pilsner this good. Pours a light, hazy amber with a massive head. Can really smell the Bavarian hops with hay-like undertones. Taste is very clean up front, with the hops behing mellowed by the malt. The hops keep it bitter, but without turning into a weak IPA. A taste of bread is also there throughout, giving it a thick mouthfeel.

Re-Rate- Bottle- Hazy golden color, small white head. Nose is hoppy, lots of european hop aroma. Flavor starts to turn to a hop flavored syrup. Very hoppy in a good way. More balanced. Pours a hazy murky gold color, small white head. Aroma is fresh english hops, grassy but not overpowering. Flavor is pleasent, not over the top nor boring. Very easy drinking tasty brew. Thanks John! 7-4-8-3-16

Impressive example of Imperial Pilsner, showcasing the harvest of Noble hops. "Imperial" Pilsners, should have big hop aroma, big pilsner malt flavor, and a big smack of Noble hop bitterness. SA Imperial Pilsner delivers on all three in a big way. Pours to a deep golden color, with a creamy white head, and a good bit of carbonation. The nose on this beer is outstanding, with lots of big, zesty, bold aromas of herbal and grassy hop aromas that flood the nostrils. The palate on this beer is very firm and slightly slick, with lots of good, crisp, pale malt flavor, on a clean and polished body. This beer finishs with more firm pale malt up front, then ends, with a very zesty,. herbal and grassy, hop bitterness that lingers. Fantastic example of the Noble hop harvest, and a beer, while strong, should be enjoyed young, to really get the zesty/vibrant hop character of this beer. The 2007 version of this one is equally impressive, with outstanding grassy, herbal hop aromas, flavors, and bitterness.

2007 bottle. Pours a hazed orangy light amber with a thin relatively dense thin white head. The nose is full of hops. Surprising to see from Sam Adams, not that I’m complaining! This smells great for a european strong lager too, really coming off like a half way decent IIPA in terms of nose. (This is close to 90 min IPA, though not in terms of the malt). The malt is big, but not too round or sweet. Just malty. Alcohol lurks beneath the surface of the nose. Creamy full body with perhaps a good deal of CO2, but not too much by any means. Sweet malt, rounder in terms of caramel and dark malt than I initially thought from the nose. A nice biting freshness to the hops as well that seemed as though it might be a bit garlicy in the nose. A bit creamy. A small amount of diacetyl. A bit fruity, perhaps a touch of apply esters? This is a big bold, interesting beer, and one I wish more of Sam Adams’ beer were like. A bit like Ruinnation. A bit like Hop Juice. But definitely less round in the malt. Clean, bitter hop bite in the finish with some small fruit.

12 ounce bottle in pint glass. Straw color with lasting flat off-white head and lotsa lace. Fresh hop flower aroma with some yeast. Overwhelmingly hoppy flavor with very slight fruitiness. Very bitter finish that lingers. Medium-full bodied, medium carbo. An interesting beer. Very flavorful hops. But why? Pilsners are supposed to be quaffable. Still, a good beer for those who think everything must be extreme, but I won’t need to drink it again.
