Commercial Description:
2005 info:This lager is made with fresh Bavarian hops, straight off the vines from the 2005 harvest in Germany, and packs an 8.8 percent alcohol content that's twice as strong as most popular beers.
Boston Beer Co. is brewing only 60,000 24-oz. bottles, which are due to begin arriving in stores in November.

2007 release info:
Yes, we're a little obsessed with hops. Every autumn for over twenty years, Jim Koch has traveled to one of the oldest hop-growing regions in the world, the Hallertau region of Bavaria in Germany, to hand-select Noble Bavarian hops, including the Hallertau Mittelfrueh variety. This special variety is considered to be one of the best in the world, prized for its unique taste and aroma. Samuel Adams® Hallertau Imperial Pilsner is a celebration of these extraordinary hops. This beer is one of the hoppiest in the world, without being overly bitter. With the first sip, you will experience an explosion of some of the world's finest hops. And we mean “explosion” in a good way. Brewed as a showcase for the hops, this bold brew highlights the spicy, citrus flavors and aromas of the Hallertau Mittelfrueh hops that are abundant in the recipe. The intense hops flavor is balanced with the slight sweetness from the malt. The brew remains pleasantly well-balanced from beginning to end, due to the quality of the hops, and continues to always be, well, "hoppy," providing hop lovers with an amazing beer drinking experience.
Available in 12oz. bottles.

My first rating of 2006. Found this one at Whole Foods in Cary, NC. Poured turbid dark straw color with an off-white head of medium size. The aroma was very lemongrassy hoppy, with a firm sour-doughy malt presence. The taste was hoppy, with a resiny, piney syrupy noble hop blast that had some fruit and a tartness at the finish. Gets tarter and more cloying as it warms. This one is a hop bomb.

Hazy golden pils with orange hues, and a thin white head. Pleasant aroma of noble hops, fruity esters (lichee?), smooth and enticing. In mouth, rich malt with resinous hops, with good bitterness on side of tongue, sustained. Rich bodied. A new classic. BBC is able to do such winners. Sélection Monde bottle brought back from Belgium by Dumdum ! Merci!

2007 edition. Head is initially average sized, frothy, off-white, mostly lasting. Body is hazy dark yellow to light amber, bottle conditioned. Aroma is lightly malty (toasted grain), moderately hoppy (resin), lightly yeasty (dough), with notes of alcohol and plastic. Flavor is moderately to heavily sweet, lightly acidic, lightly to moderately bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, lightly acidic, moderately to heavily bitter. Medium to full body, velvety texture, lively carbonation, moderately alcoholic. What a waste of Hallertauer. It just smells like piney <insert American hop variety here>, so obviously utilization and format (e.g., green hops) make a huge difference. Off notes, clumsy, and a hiliarious quote on the description...who actually thinks BBC is obsessed with hops? Anyone? Bueller?

Imperial what?! Hop resin is about it in the nose. Not bad for Sam Adams overall, however...aftertaste didn’t make me feel like I’d just swallowed a stink bug. (5/4/6/4/11=3.0)

22 oz bottle, from Premier Gourmet in Buffalo NY, cellar temperature in a Christoffel glass. Ruddy orange-amber, translucent-to-opaque, crowned by an unending thick white bubbly cap, just beautiful....lots of pale malt, resinous-orangey hops in the nose, some sharp just-cut grassiness....body is very, very sweet, lightly alcoholic with strong earthy hoppiness present from midpalate on, and a moderate fruitiness (orange-cherry) that seems a bit out-of-place with the otherwise earthy/herbal character....body gets somewhat syrupy as it warms....still, it’s fairly drinkable and enjoyable, though the alcohol & earthiness seem to meld into a metallic/mineralic aftertaste that isn’t really to my liking. Certainly an interesting experiment from SA, one that I might have again were it cheaper and available closeby.

The lager I would choose to be on a desert island with. If ales were not available. Truthfully, this has so many ale characteristics, I wonder why lagers are so.... There is a bit of malt lingering within, but the hops are so wonderfully dominant. Love the opacity. Gee this is wonderful stuff. I’d like to comment on the citrus aspects, but it’s a bit more like pine to me. This is unfiltered, but was it pasteurized? Is this "real lager"? "It’s real, or it isn’t. It’s ale, or it’s not. If it isn’t, and it’s not, why drink it?" Damn me, if this couldn’t cause me to rethink that. Course if it’s real, I’d not have to.

I can appreciate the experiement here, but it doesn’t quite work for me. Props to Sam Adams for trying something different, though. The body is a hazy dark orange with a white head. The aroma is grassy with fresh hops and some oranges. There is also some fresh cut oak. The taste is a bit confusing. You get spicy potatoes and some carrots from the lager. There is also dry apple core and some grapefruit from teh hops. This is unblanced and the hops overtake in the finish. There is also some bread crust. Hop heads will probably love this one.

Floral, musty, piney, orange, leafy and spicy characteristics in the extremely hoppy nose. Opaque amber-copper coloured body is topped with a decent white head that recedes to a partial cover and ring. Sweet crystal malt flavour with moderate bitterness. Plenty of piney-orange hop flavour. Seem more like an American hop variety than hallertau to me. Malt body is not enough to support the hop levels and flavour comes across as more ale-like than lager. Medium body with soft but lively carbonation that engages the tongue. Bottle enjoyed with MartinT, Olivier_MTL, Rastacouere and Siroy.

Bottle and served in my Duval snifter: Pours a hazy golden hue with a small fading head but very good lace. The aroma has notes of grassy and citric hops, sweet malts, candi sugar, butterscotch, and alcoholic vapours that seem to dominate. That continues on towards to taste that is equally dominated by an alcohol presence that overpowers the bittersweet character. Seems way too one-diminsional even with the bitter and resin like finish that gave me a metallic and astrengent mouthfeel. Strangely felt flat and boring, no excitement found here. A waste of money just like most SA big beers. I just don’t get it.
