Perfumey with sweet malt underneath. Flavor starts sweet and malty that turns to a moderately sized hop bitterness from the middle of the beer to the long finish. | 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Sep 20, 2007 Picked up four pack of 12-oz bottles at Cellar’s Wine & Spirits in St Paul, MN. Pours a semi-hazy orange amber brew with a decent off-white head that has a slow dissolve and excellent lacing. Aroma of piney and citrus hops, black pepper, some caramel malt and a touch of pepper spice. Taste is medium bodied, very light carbonation with a decent hop burn and caramel flavor. Finish is very bitter that would keep the hop heads quite happy. Very impressive. Ughsmash (4046), Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Nov 21, 2005 Poured a most-excellent medium amber with a nice layer of off-white head. Very thorough lacing followed this down. This brew was hop-tacular... hops ran the gamut from citrus (grapefruit and orange zest), pine, and a fresh floral harvest. However, there were soft caramel undertones that provided some balance. Hops first and foremost in the flavor, too... with the little bit of caramel backing it up. Very bitter all the way through, with a long grapefruit finish that was somewhat warming. This was very good, and a little extra malt presence / complexity could’ve made this great. | 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Apr 18, 2006 Bottle (1pt 8oz). Shared with blankboy, his bottle - 2005 Harvest. Poured cloudy amber-orange with a large, lasting, pillowy foamy beige head. Pleasantly peppery/yeasty aroma of funky UK and NorAm hops, some juicy light malt backing - nice; herbal, citrus zesty, sort of marigold floral; not earth-shattering, but nice. There’s a burnt caramel character to this that competes with the funky hops, which come across even more like orange and grapefruit zest than in the nose - the finish is medium-high bitterness that hits its level quickly and stays there, never overpowering, but the burnt caramel malt adds an almost harsh note to it - damn fine, though, and while I don’t taste the alcohol, I "feel" it for sure. Mouthfeel is creamy, thick, astringent, decently carbonated, and the complex interplay between the various hops and the malt really impressed me, although a point off for the indirect booziness. Overall I’d recommend this highly - I echo xproudfoot - this comes from Sam Adams? Who REALLY brews this for them ... Thanks to blankboy for sharing this monster! | 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Dec 5, 2005 Unfiltered strong lager with unusual copper look. Citric hop character, sweet malt behind. Signature is very different from Mocne of Europe. Very bitter up front, bold, bitter middle as well at finish. This beer reminds me of more bitter Pale Ales I had in past. Warming alcohol was well covered by hops. I would say this beer is not the most balanced in the world, but I am guessing never intended to be. New style Bitter Strong lager is born. beerguy101 (3946), Newark, California, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Dec 14, 2005 This Imperial Pilsner pours a hazy deep golden brown from a 22oz bottle. Large sized white foamy head. Aroma is piney and brown sugar. A medium to full bodied strong lager. Malts are fruity with lots of orange peel. Hops are grapefruity and fairly bitter. Lots of grapefruit but mainly just a lot of hop bitterness. The citrus and grapefruity is more evident in the aftertaste and finish. Very full taste, nearly chewy. It will be interesting to see how or if this beer will age. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is bitter. thedm (3836), Fort Wayne, Indiana, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Dec 24, 2005 This bottled brew poured a large sized head of foamy medium sized long lasting unnoted colored bubbles that left behind an excellent thick lacing. The body contained unnoted carbonation, was slightly hazy and orange brown in color. Its aroma contained notes of mild floral malty hoppy notes. Its mouth feel is initially tingly with a lingering tingly palate and a mild acidic aftertaste. Its flavor favors the hops with malty hoppy notes and was heavy with pilsenerish malt hop flavors. All-in-all very nice brew.
