Commercial Description:
2005 info:This lager is made with fresh Bavarian hops, straight off the vines from the 2005 harvest in Germany, and packs an 8.8 percent alcohol content that's twice as strong as most popular beers.
Boston Beer Co. is brewing only 60,000 24-oz. bottles, which are due to begin arriving in stores in November.

2007 release info:
Yes, we're a little obsessed with hops. Every autumn for over twenty years, Jim Koch has traveled to one of the oldest hop-growing regions in the world, the Hallertau region of Bavaria in Germany, to hand-select Noble Bavarian hops, including the Hallertau Mittelfrueh variety. This special variety is considered to be one of the best in the world, prized for its unique taste and aroma. Samuel Adams® Hallertau Imperial Pilsner is a celebration of these extraordinary hops. This beer is one of the hoppiest in the world, without being overly bitter. With the first sip, you will experience an explosion of some of the world's finest hops. And we mean “explosion” in a good way. Brewed as a showcase for the hops, this bold brew highlights the spicy, citrus flavors and aromas of the Hallertau Mittelfrueh hops that are abundant in the recipe. The intense hops flavor is balanced with the slight sweetness from the malt. The brew remains pleasantly well-balanced from beginning to end, due to the quality of the hops, and continues to always be, well, "hoppy," providing hop lovers with an amazing beer drinking experience.
Available in 12oz. bottles.

Wow, its been a long time since I had a beer with a big blast of Hallertauer like this one! Reveals its distant connection to Cascade, it does. Resiny grapefruit rind. Malts here are clean. Long bitter finish. Good stuff.

The beer decamps the brown 22-ounce bottle a foggy rust color with a dinosauric creamy light tan head that slowly dissipates leaving a thick blanket of lace to obfuscate the glass, also a lot of dregs at the bottom, upon decanting they become suspended. Nose has a nice hint of hops, sweet malt, some citrus like tartness, quite a nice treat for the schnozzle, start is quite sweet, then a strong bitterness, the grain presence delectable, the top middling to slightly full in feel. Finish is benign in its acidity, the hops dynamic in their spiciness, quite dry and long lasting aftertaste, damn if all pilsners tasted like this, I might learn to lov’em!

Although a huge fan of assertive American IPA’s loaded with northwestern U.S. hops I must say this muscular Pilsner does not disappoint. Pours from the bottle a murky golden orange with a generous, lasting white head. Although the Noble hop aromas may not be as upfront as say a Cascade or Amarillo, a pleasant fresh cut grass, herb and spice nose is served up with a subtle maltiness in the background. Mouthfeel is full and round, almost enough to sink your teeth into. Flavor is chock full of a concentrated hop resin bitterness; like biting through the skin of a whole grapefruit. However, all is nicely balanced with an abundant toasted malt sweetness. If you enjoy bitter beers this will not disappoint. They must have really had to load in the Hallertauers to acheive this level of bitterness since they are low alpha acid hops. The 8.8% alcohol serves to amplify the entire experience but seems reserved and well hidden. A nice adventure in the world of exceptional craft beer.

Cloudy deep blond color. Deep hoppy aroma, a bit sweaty and honeyish, and some fusel; light fruits too. Toffee flavor, with dry edges; strong bitterness, with dry resins. Unbalanced.

Beautiful hazy copper color. Powerful hoppy aroma, more resiny and fruity than expected. Strong body, with a strong caramel-toffee flavor and an extreme hopping; the hopping is quite resiny; compared to an IPA it has less body and less fruitness. Very good.

I wasn’t rating when I first had this and loved it, so when it came out again I was not only giddy to be able to try it again, but to have the opportunity rate a beer that I dug a lot. Pours murky orange / amber with a large extra-soapy off-white head that has good lacing. The aroma has a fantastic amount of floral hops as well as hop traits of spice, woodiness, and earthiness. There is some noticeable pils malt, but it’s mainly a hoppy bomb. Medium / full body that is velvety, resiny and rich with some semi-soft carbonation on the finish. The flavor starts with semi-sweet pils malt and all the hop traits from the aroma. It is very clean with almost a fresh / green hop quality. The finish contains more sweet pils malt and spice. While this does have some pils traits is misses a lot - lightness, grassiness and such. However, for what it is it is excellent and I wish this was available more often. Easily the best beer made by the Boston Beer Company. Thumbs enthusiastically up!!

New batch (2008) at the brewery. Pours a hazy deep golden with a fluffly long lasting head and nice solid lace. Aroma is almost resinous with how much hallertauer hops are in here- insanely floral and fresh with a good big pils malt backbone to stand up to the hops. I like how the malt is perfect- it serves a good frame fro the hops but doesnt get sweet, sharp or thick like other imperial pilsners- the hopss come through perfectly- tons of fresh floral and lightly herbal hops, lgith citrus notes, and an insanely good bitter finish that makes you want more. I think Ill buy quite a bit when this comes out.

Pours a slightly dark copper. White head dies quickly. Excellent nose of bakery and caramel (10 out of 10). Hops galore. Bitter as hell. Not as good as Hopslam, but close!

Hazy golden pils with orange hues, and a thin white head. Pleasant aroma of noble hops, fruity esters (lichee?), smooth and enticing. In mouth, rich malt with resinous hops, with good bitterness on side of tongue, sustained. Rich bodied. A new classic. BBC is able to do such winners. Sélection Monde bottle brought back from Belgium by Dumdum ! Merci!
