Pours hazy orange, with a thick, chunky, long lasting, orangish head and sheets of sticky lace.
I’m in a quandry here. This is callled a pilsner, imperial or not, it should be clear no? It looks more like an APA or IPA and it looks good, real good.... ah what the hell I’ll give it high marks for appearance.
Aroma is again not very pilsnerish. a little sweetness, but mostly fresh grassy hops, a little peppery. and a little caramel comes out with agitation.
Flavor is sweet/spicy/ lightly bitter. Ruby red grapefruit w/ pith and maybe a bit of zest and 2 teaspoons of sugar.
I’ll buy again oh yeah ross (1709), weddington, South Carolina, USA

| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 5/5 | 15/20 | Dec 31, 2005 I actually really enjoyed this one. Orange copperish in color with a nice big hefty off brown head. The nose was strong with piney hops and a kick malts in the back. Just about the same for the taste. One thing tho, after a while it kind of wore on me and I found it hard to drink. Not because it was too strong or whatever but something just didnt mesh. mdi (573), Nebraska, USA

Its rare that I see a SA beer and grab it immediately in a beer store(OK, NEVER before this). But this one sounded promising. I found it odd that it was dated to be enjoyed_before_ January 06...they don’t want this thing sitting around I guess. It couldn’t be more than a few weeks old as it is...but anyway...I liked the lable...I’m glad it didn’t have that idiotic looking colonial guy on it. Pours into a chalice with a slight head, I probably should have chosen a tulip. It certainly doesn’t look like a pilsner, it is amber colored...its aroma though, screams fresh noble hops. Lovely resiny and floral aromas. Head is a bit tan when I swirl it, it leaves a little bit of clinging lace. This beer has some body, its big, you can taste the loads of malt that went into it. its sweet and carmel, but has plenty of hop bitterness to provide balance...a lovely lingering hops bitterness showcases every nuance that the aroma hinted at..I’m really impressed with this. I hope it becomes an annual offering with a little bit more production so I can buy it locally!...and it appears to be bottle conditioned, or at least unfiltered. I love it...purchased at Happy Harry’s in Fargo for $5.50. scoobyluv (486), Chattanooga, Tennessee, USA

| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Dec 16, 2005 dizzam! could this be the best sam adams i’ve tried? yeah, most likely, although i haven’t tried many sam adams... this automatically reminds me of an IIPA, but it isn’t quite that, is it? nearly dead and nearly hazy, amber-copper pour; hazy orange-copper body, yellow-orange highlight, little eggwhite head; chewy, juicy, earthy palate, but not overly done; slight berry, but definitely grapefruit, some fuel, and the rest i guess is green tea, oh, definitely floral; a bit of a chunky sweet and pretty earth upfront, then primarily bitter and dry in the end with some alcohol; sticky enough to leave some great lace, which makes you think it came from some kind of artistic head; great brew, and the most interesting notes i’ve had in awhile! thank you Samuel Adams! stubby (326), Santee, California, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 15/20 | Nov 23, 2005 I love the aroma of this one. Nice chewy head that stayed about half way down the glass. Complex flavors of fresh hops and malt. Piney, citrusy slightly milky? Almost like an ale... well balanced, hard to define. Just about one skip short of an American barley wine. | 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Dec 20, 2005 Updated: Sep 29, 2007Wow, surprisingly awesome. I’ve had plenty of different Sam Adams and I finally gave up any expectations of them being able to create an above average beer. $5 for a 24 oz bottle, made me a little skeptical since a 24oz bottle of regular sam adams is like $1.95 but this is well worth it. Plus the 2x abv. There is a only a mild hoppy aroma which is somewhat disappointing. Pours hazy copper color with little to no head. Flavor is exceptional. Strong bitterness and citrusy hops. This beer is an imperial IPA without the strong aroma and a more balanced hoppiness with the malt. If this beer had a more glorious head and a stronger aroma there’s no telling what it could do. The only other imperial pilsner that I have to compare to this is the Rogue one and this is head and shoulders above that. Rerate, this is still a solid beer. super hoppy. for some reason it aint very cold but i love it.
