Orange copperish in color with a nice big hefty off brown head. The nose was strong with piney hops and a kick malts in the back. Just about the same for the taste. One thing tho, after a while it kind of wore on me and I found it hard to drink. Not because it was too strong or whatever but something just didnt mesh. mdi (573), Nebraska, USA

Its rare that I see a SA beer and grab it immediately in a beer store(OK, NEVER before this). But this one sounded promising. I found it odd that it was dated to be enjoyed_before_ January 06...they don’t want this thing sitting around I guess. It couldn’t be more than a few weeks old as it is...but anyway...I liked the lable...I’m glad it didn’t have that idiotic looking colonial guy on it. Pours into a chalice with a slight head, I probably should have chosen a tulip. It certainly doesn’t look like a pilsner, it is amber colored...its aroma though, screams fresh noble hops. Lovely resiny and floral aromas. Head is a bit tan when I swirl it, it leaves a little bit of clinging lace. This beer has some body, its big, you can taste the loads of malt that went into it. its sweet and carmel, but has plenty of hop bitterness to provide balance...a lovely lingering hops bitterness showcases every nuance that the aroma hinted at..I’m really impressed with this. I hope it becomes an annual offering with a little bit more production so I can buy it locally!...and it appears to be bottle conditioned, or at least unfiltered. I love it...purchased at Happy Harry’s in Fargo for $5.50. Britales (56), Cape Charles, Virginia, USA

Thick, great hop flavor, malt is present, great finish! Maybe not a true Imperial Pils, ( more like an Old Ale IMO)but damn good!! Say what you like about Jim Koch, but this is the best I have tasted from S A in a long time! Great effort, must get more even though sources are drying up!!! piscator34 (1134), Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Dec 5, 2007 Bottled sample via oakbluff. Hazy orange in colour with moderate carbonation. Huge aromas of green grassy hops with some bread crusty pilsner malt lurking in the background. There’s a very minor alcohol note there too, but it’s hardly even worth mentioning. Oily and rich mouthfeel. Hop forward in the mouth as you’d expect from the aroma. With notes of cut grass, lemon rind, earth, and a bit of spice. The malts are there too, offering a slight hint of caramel, but more of a light french bread element. Solid peppery bitterness. Sort of the IIPA of the lager world. Excellent stuff! 11026 (1772), Alabama, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Dec 13, 2005 Bottle supplied by the man, Styles. Slightly hazy, coppery-orange color. Quite a nice white head forms in a dense 1/2" and gradually becomes more rocky as if fades to a scant layer and ring. Nice lacing is left behind. Medium bodied. Aroma is lightly earthy, full of noble hop goodness with bits of toasty malt also. Quite the hop forward beer. Ample bitterness stands out, salivary glands go into overdrive, enamel is lost. Quite nicely done. Thank you Sam Adams! 19641948 (491), Greensboro, North Carolina, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Oct 15, 2007 2007 version. Pours a turbid honeyed orange color with an aggressive head of off-white. Laces in droopy design. Aromas smack the nares with an overdose of Hallertau. Sweet coating flavors with an aftertaste of bitter. A wallop of German hoppiness. Fantastic hop burps. Sweet and borderline cloying before the caustic hop bitterness wipes the slate clean. A pilsner? I guess so. It’s just a sticky bitter hop bomb of a pilsner... | 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Feb 12, 2008 This golden ale poured with a thin off-white head, eliciting a floral aroma. The flavor is very hoppy with a long bitter finish, and is quite substantial for a pilsner. This is an excellent beer for hopheads and a pretty satisfying brew for others - an impressive efffort from Samuel Adams.
