| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Nov 19, 2005 Impressive offering: Strong hops balanced by equally strong malt. Body is lighter, but by no means weak. Alcohol presence is strong, but not overwhelming. Still, this beer packs a punch. I’d love to see how it tastes a few years from now. sammy3D (114), Lawrenceville, Georgia, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Dec 4, 2005 Poured from a bottle this beer appears a orangey gold with a nice creamy head. Bready malts with plenty of spicy grassy hops on the nose. Flavor is awesome sporting plenty of spicy hops with citrus and grassy tones being dominant. The finish has a balance with the malts making a brief appearance and then the hops come back and linger on the palate. Tons of lacing on the glass as I sip.
This is not your typical Sam Adams brew!
Mouthfeel is smooth with a bit of the 8.8 ABV making itself known in the throat and definitely warming the belly. This is a big beer and definitely the best pilsner I have had. noahsbeer (3), Tucson, Arizona, USA does not count | 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 2/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 19/20 | Apr 26, 2006 oily feel, med-light body, average carbonation, long finish, floral, cloudy, light-tan foam, orange-amber color. There was some definite out of the box thinking going on when brewing this. Pretty close to an Double IPA. The use of hops make you forget that your drinking a pilsner. Great taste for someone who loves IPA’s, but definitely out of style. talon1117 (623), Bellvue, Colorado, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Sep 28, 2007 Updated: Sep 10, 20082007 version. Pours a hazy orange color with a white, creamy, moderately full head which is mostly lasting and leaves nice lacing. Nose is great and quite potent, certainly unique; citrus is noted first with bitter oranges and white grapefruit peel, fresh flowers, and spicy undertones with a malt backbone of buttery biscuits and cookie. Flavor is nice and similar; bitter oranges fill the palate with also grapefruit peel, floral notes leading to dry, herbal notes into the finish. Bitterness is moderately high and balances the supporting malt tones of biscuits and sweet bread. Palate is medium to moderately full, soft to lively, and somewhat round and velvety; dry into the finish. Finishes quite long with some spicy resins, dry herbal notes, and some bitter oranges sticking around as well; spicy notes stay on the tongue quite a while. I still don’t believe this is a Sam Adams beer, solid in every aspect. Great hop presence in the nose and flavor with just the right amount of bitterness and a nice, supporting malt backbone. Much better than any pils or imp pils I’ve tried; so fresh and exploding with hops, I wonder how this one would stand up with some aging? Possibly the best lager I’ve had and from Sam Adams?? Completely unexpected. Slacks (485), Bolton, Ontario, Canada
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Sep 5, 2009 Bottle: Pours deep orange, slightly hazy, nice off-white head. Aroma is super heavy in floral and citrus hops, almost soapy, with great spice notes. The flavour is exceptional - this is the IPA of lagers with tremendous hopping just assaulting the taste buds alongside a very rich malt backing. It’s not terribly complex but it doesn’t need to be, this is a shock for me and probably the single best, most flavourful lager I’ve ever poured down my gullet. riversideAK (2736), Shoreline, Washington, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Nov 23, 2007 Hazy gold with a thin sticky head. Aroma is citrus hops, grass hops, and some bread like maltiness. Wow this is intensely hoppy. Bitter. Bitter. Bitter. But not over the top. Lots of pine, notes of grapefruit, earth, herbs...man! The slightest bready malt notes make an appearance, but this is hop dominated. Very dry, resiny, pungent. A little warmth, but for the most part the hops cover it up. This is hands down, the best Sam beer I have ever had. arrogantb (705), Denver, Colorado, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Sep 1, 2009 Dark yellow almost orange with a head that lasted the whole way down. The first smell from the bottle is an amazing dose of hops. The second smell from the glass is just as glorious. Jim Koch is speaking the truth when he touts the amount of hops because the nose is amazing. Fruity, grassy, floral hops and then the taste is more hops and a nice malty backbone with some caramel flavor. This is unlike any pilsner I have ever had but the smell is so beautiful and the taste is delicious. This beer is hoppier than many IPA’s I have had but doesn’t have much bitterness to speak of which I believe is noted on the carton. This has completely upset what I thought I knew about Sam Adam’s. I have had several of their beers but nothing even comes close to this. The 8.8 ABV is undetectable to the taste at first but a little astringent on my tongue halfway through. Top notch and every bit as hoppy as claimed on the label, hopheads should love this. I will now proceed to give Sam Adams lineup a second look, well done.
