Commercial Description:
2005 info:This lager is made with fresh Bavarian hops, straight off the vines from the 2005 harvest in Germany, and packs an 8.8 percent alcohol content that's twice as strong as most popular beers.
Boston Beer Co. is brewing only 60,000 24-oz. bottles, which are due to begin arriving in stores in November.

2007 release info:
Yes, we're a little obsessed with hops. Every autumn for over twenty years, Jim Koch has traveled to one of the oldest hop-growing regions in the world, the Hallertau region of Bavaria in Germany, to hand-select Noble Bavarian hops, including the Hallertau Mittelfrueh variety. This special variety is considered to be one of the best in the world, prized for its unique taste and aroma. Samuel Adams® Hallertau Imperial Pilsner is a celebration of these extraordinary hops. This beer is one of the hoppiest in the world, without being overly bitter. With the first sip, you will experience an explosion of some of the world's finest hops. And we mean “explosion” in a good way. Brewed as a showcase for the hops, this bold brew highlights the spicy, citrus flavors and aromas of the Hallertau Mittelfrueh hops that are abundant in the recipe. The intense hops flavor is balanced with the slight sweetness from the malt. The brew remains pleasantly well-balanced from beginning to end, due to the quality of the hops, and continues to always be, well, "hoppy," providing hop lovers with an amazing beer drinking experience.
Available in 12oz. bottles.

Hazy gold with a thin sticky head. Aroma is citrus hops, grass hops, and some bread like maltiness. Wow this is intensely hoppy. Bitter. Bitter. Bitter. But not over the top. Lots of pine, notes of grapefruit, earth, herbs...man! The slightest bready malt notes make an appearance, but this is hop dominated. Very dry, resiny, pungent. A little warmth, but for the most part the hops cover it up. This is hands down, the best Sam beer I have ever had.

Dark yellow almost orange with a head that lasted the whole way down. The first smell from the bottle is an amazing dose of hops. The second smell from the glass is just as glorious. Jim Koch is speaking the truth when he touts the amount of hops because the nose is amazing. Fruity, grassy, floral hops and then the taste is more hops and a nice malty backbone with some caramel flavor. This is unlike any pilsner I have ever had but the smell is so beautiful and the taste is delicious. This beer is hoppier than many IPA’s I have had but doesn’t have much bitterness to speak of which I believe is noted on the carton. This has completely upset what I thought I knew about Sam Adam’s. I have had several of their beers but nothing even comes close to this. The 8.8 ABV is undetectable to the taste at first but a little astringent on my tongue halfway through. Top notch and every bit as hoppy as claimed on the label, hopheads should love this. I will now proceed to give Sam Adams lineup a second look, well done. I was extremely impressed by this beer. If I was blind tasting it, I would’ve thought it was an IIPA. Nevertheless, the aroma is sweet hops and malts. The flavor is incredible. This beer shows incredible restraint. It begins with smooth malts, and then explodes with resinous solid hop flavor. The hop flavor is restrained, and not overdone. The balance is wonderfull. The best thing about this beer is that the hop presence does not linger on the palate like most strong ipas do. It finishes remarkably clean, which is amazing for how strong the hop flavor is. This beer is smooth throughout, with a wonderfully strong hop presence that is restrained and balanced by subtle malts. I would place this beer against any american ipa or imperial ipa. Very good stuff from Sam Adams!

Nice golden color with tremendous hints of hops. When tasted, the hops my friend are there to party in the mouth. Excellent stuff! The aftertaste is every bit as great as the whole experience from the beer leaving the bottle to ending up in my belly. Superb!

Pours a hazy orange with white head. Strong aroma of citrus and hops. Creamy, full mouthfeel with tastes of crisp orange, honey, caramel and maybe a hint of mint. Finish is long and hoppy. Like it says, hoppy without being overly bitter.

4-pack (2007) from Total Wine, River Edge, NJ...label is totally different from what is shown here...bottle pours cloudy orange with a white head...great floral aroma with scents of ripe orange...taste is of sweet citrus and bitter HOPS...smooth mouthfeel with good lacing on my Simon Pearce Beaker (gift from the in-laws...thanks!)...great hoppy brew, right up my alley.

Wow....what a beer. Crazy with the hops. Hops, hops, and more hops. Pours a hazy orange with thin white head. The hallertau hops are everywhere.....aroma, flavor, finish..you name it. From the first spicy aroma to the initial blast of citrus flavors.....some orange and grapefruit...to lingering bitterness and spiciness, this is one fantastic beer that showcases on of the great hop varieties of the world.
