Commercial Description:
Sam Adams Imperial White pushes the boundaries of a witbier. While the brew delivers orange and coriander notes typical of a witbier, it has a bigger mouthfeel and body. It is truly a unique brew.

This one pours a deep rich apricot color with a tall froth that lingers. Strong sticky sweet aromatics come into play here with a bit of spice. Full nectar weight with creamy carbonation set the stage pushing cloyingly sweet stonefruit essence forefront. Not much left after this sweet malt sludge overfill. This is more like a n English barleywine in style. Very little spice if any. The finish is more acidic than bittered. Ugh! I’m not sure why this rates as high as it does @ 86 for style as of 4-4-2009. I will say the texture on this is outstanding.

12oz bottle. Somewhat dark orange color with a white head. Lots of rich orange aroma a little spicy as well. Sweet, smooth, the alcohol is right up front on this one, more sweet spiciness. Not bad.

Bottle from SL. The pour was amber to orange in color, hazy appearance, weak head for the style for sure. The aroma was pretty simple, orange, coriander, malty sweetness/candi sugar-ish. The flavor followed, strong sweet lighter fruits (oranges, bananas), some spicing (coriander pretty much), caramel, finishing with a lingering sweetness. The mouthfeel was bordering on sticky, although the body didn’t quite match a sticky character. An ok brew, but pretty simple and primarily sweet.

Bottle. Pours a hazy amber orange body with a white lacing. Fruity alcohol latent aroma with hints of coriander and bananas. Big fruity pear alcohol and some tangy spices. Big overly sweet banana and alcohol. Eh.

Sampled on 4/1/2009. This wit beer pours a fairly cloudy dark orange gold color from a 12oz bottle. Small to medium sized white foamy head, with decent retention and good lacing. The aroma is fruity, peaches, oranges, banana and spices. A medium to full bodied wit. The malts are fruity, ester and sweet. The hops are floral. Lively carbonation. Interesting mix of flavors, coriander, cloves, orange and some fruity esters. Fairly smooth tasting, yet with a whole bunch of alcohol at the finish. The semi-sweet orange flavors balance the spices well. Good mix of malt, spice and alcohol. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is crisp and clean. Aftertaste is slightly sweet with a big alcohol burn.

12oz bottle. Poured a medium orange/amber color with a smaller sized off whtie head. Aromas of citrus (mainly oranges), coriander, some wheat, and caramel. Tastes of citrus (the same oranges), wheat, sugary sweet, and caramel. Sweet with some alcohol in the finish.

Bottle : The aroma consists of strong yeastiness, banana, apple, alcohol, and faint spiciness. It pours a transparent amber with a moderate creamy white head. The flavor starts with lots of banana and moderate apple. The finish has noticeable alcohol and faint spice. Medium bodied with a soft mouthfeel that comes across slightly syrupy.
