Commercial Description:
Bruce describes his classic German-style lager as "pale gold in color with a blend of Pilsner maltiness and a mild hops aroma. The bitterness is just enough to balance the taste of the malt." Bruce is a former music teacher who began homebrewing 13 years ago when his wife gave him a kit for Christmas. He has since become an accomplished homebrewer and shares his knowledge and passion for beer by teaching classes in homebrewing and beer appreciation.

Bottle: Lots of pale lager aromas with a hint of citrus, fruit, and grassy hops. It pours a transparent golden-orange with a small white head. The flavor starts with sweet Euro-lager flavors with some very faint caramel. Moderate grassy bitter finish.

Beer pours an attractive slightly cloudy gold color with a nice fluffy egg white head. Aroma is dried grassy hops with a small sweet aroma and malt. Flavor is initially sweet, then hoppy then finishes with a bit of cloying sweetness that is out of place. A decent beer.

Pale gold with whispy white head. Grainy nose with similar body. Bottle might have been on the end of its shelf life, because there was the faintest unpleasant hint in the overall solid flavor.

Straw color; small, white head; tiny, lively bubbles. Aroma of bready malt, light apple juice; barely grassy. Flavor is bready malts; light caramel; surprisingly and perhaps inappropriately hoppy. Medium-light body; slightly sticky. Hoppier than I would like, but drinkable.

Let’s get one thing straight, folks, I am a Dortmunder Export Snob. Its a bold statement, I know, but I just want everyone to know I won’t be pulling any punches on this review. Appearance: Pours a bright, sparkling golden body topped by a fluffy white head. Smell: Pleasing aroma of biscuits, with a drizzle of honey and fresh-cut flowers. and a gentle hoppiness. Maybe even a pat or two or butter! Taste: Light malty sweetness with hints of bread and honey. A fruity/floral twang develops just as the hops pop. Hey, is anyone else picking up a pinch of sea salt? Huh. Plenty of residual yeast flavors in the lightly bitter, lightly sweet finish. Mouthfeel: Thin-bodied, with a sticky mouthfeel. Lightly carbonated. Drinkability: A easy-drinking, splendid little lager! I quite enjoyed it.

Aroma of lighter malt with noticeable hop. Brassy color with a decent white head that even attempts to lace. Medium bodied, starts a bit sweet from the malt, there is a hop bite that pleasantly offsets the malt, and the finish has enough bitter to satisfy. There are some delicate fruit notes along the way.

Rated 2/7/07: Bold Dortmunder, by a good ol’ homebrewer. I like what’s involved in this German style bier. Crisp malty aroma partnered with a sharp hop bitterness. Spectacular deep dark golden pour producing a thick head and a solid coat of lacing on the glass. Wonderful carbonation keeps my eyes focused on the glass. Rather filling with a nice finish very well rounded and rich. Solid malt content, falls in line with it’s respected style. In fact, the flavor on this one is much more assertive than many of the others I’ve sampled. Well done and thanks goes to Sammy’s for providing this one.
