Commercial Description:
Bruce describes his classic German-style lager as "pale gold in color with a blend of Pilsner maltiness and a mild hops aroma. The bitterness is just enough to balance the taste of the malt." Bruce is a former music teacher who began homebrewing 13 years ago when his wife gave him a kit for Christmas. He has since become an accomplished homebrewer and shares his knowledge and passion for beer by teaching classes in homebrewing and beer appreciation.

Bottle. Nice hoppy nose, beany with heavy grain aromas. Mild neutral fruit. Mild acidity. Hazy golden amber with thin white head, light lacing. Medium bodied with medium carbonation. Bit of carbonic tang on the way down. Starts with good hops crispness and acidity. Mild grainy sweetness, beany. Shy of cooked corn but it’s threatening. Rounded maltiness with good biting finish. After is lightly bitter with slight tang. Good session drink.

Pours a dark golden with foamy white head. Aroma is soapy malts and a hint of hops. Flavor was sweet malts, grains, some honey and fruit, and a surprising bitter hop finish. Nice complex flavors with a doughy mouthfeel. Enjoyable.

Poiur was dark golden and crystal clear, propping up a thin white head that offered no lacing. The aroma was apples and champagne, with a bit of floral hops. The flavor was plenty of malt with some acidic apple and alcohol flavors. A bit of spice is noted as well. The mouthfeel is plagued by the high concentration of fizzy carbonation. Pretty average.

12oz. Bottle Longshot 6-Pack $7.99 Herman’s Longshot Dortmunder pours a crystal clear golden. Many big carbonation bubbles quickly rise to the 1 finger creamy, ruddy white head. The head slowly fades to a half finger cap. Minimal lacing. Looks good. The smell is clean graininess. The grains are followed by a pleasant perfume and floral hop aroma. There’s also a hint of muscat grapes that goes nicely with the scent of the floral hops. As it warms I pick up a dusty aroma. Taste is just the same as the aroma. Raw grain flavor with interruptions from the floral hops. Finishes with a hefty raw grain load and a spicy hop finish. Mild metallic twang every few sips. Mouthfeel is good. The body is medium and smooth. Crisp, refreshing and finishes dry. This is an enjoyable beer that would be easy to drink a few in a sitting. Refreshing. Overall this is a tasty beer. Every few sips I pick up that funny metallic twang that I get from all Sam Adam’s beers but besides that it’s a good beer. 3/1/07

Creamy head...golden color...malty aroma...smells better than it tastes..a mild malty flavor...decent balance...reminds me of a baby Scottish ale...a bit bitter on the finish...an easy going brew

A somewhat sensuous cigarette smoke, grain and dough aroma at first, going on to a nearly Bohemian lightly diactyl malt smell. Mostly clear honey gold, bad label, great cap. Webby, sudsy, nearly-white head. Bohemian bio-experiment flavors over a sweetish, slightly salty malt backbone. Finishes out dry and grainy, medium body, with some sunny light fruit notes. A distinctive brew, drinkable and complex. Kudos again to Boston Beer for bringing craft to the mass market. Thanks to PorterPounder for hauling this one back from someplace for me.

Pours a clear golden color with a medium and foamy white head that lasts awhile. Minimal lacing on the glass. The aroma is mildly hoppy with touches of yeast and grass. Light, dry body with a clean malt and hops flavor, as well as a bit of spice. The finish is earthy malt with a light spice aftertaste. Above average for the style but I was hoping for a little more out of a homebrewer who made the big time.
