Commercial Description:
While there is a great malty foundation to this brew, Mike’s Double IPA showcases his appreciate for hops. In fact, he included seven different varieties of American hops, totaling over six pounds of hops per barrel. The hops add an intense floral and citrus aroma to this brew.

12oz bottle–pours a rich light tan head and amber/copper color. Aroma is floral/herbal hops (cascade, Willamette, centennial?), secondary medium malt, then some pine, chemical. Taste is chemical/metallic/resiny hops with some bitter, secondary medium malt, syrupy mouth feel. This beer varies as I progress on both aroma and taste. And some sugary butterscotch (diacytl?). not crazy about. Thanks to Joe-jwc215 for sharing. 091025rerate-12oz bottle-pours an off white head and cloudy copper color. Aroma is orange/lemon-citrus/pine hops, secondary medium malt. Taste is orange/lemon-citrus/pine/floral hops, secondary medium malt-caramel, some tannins. Thanks stevo for sharing. 3.6

Bottle pours a hazy orange amber body with a tall offwhite head. Aroma is grassy and grapefruity hops with some toasted caramel. Medium body is thick and creamy. Taste has a citrusy grapefruit character, with some chewy caramel and grassy hop bitterness. A very well balanced DIPA that is dangerously drinkable.

Bottle from LS pack. Very hoppy aroma was wonderful; floral and grassy. Poured clear copper color. No malts were present with overwhelming HOP flavor. Little too hoppy for my taste but fit the style. Hops left some souring aftertaste on the palate. Hops lingered in my teeth minutes later. A sipping brew for me that lasts a while. This beer was a good experiance and I’m glad S.A. does the competition. Glad to taste and support brews from fellow homebrewers.

Pours a hazy burnt orange with a creamy white head. Aroma of grapefruit, breadcrust, brown sugar, toffee, but the sweetish earthy grapefruit is the main attraction. Tastes of brown sugar, caramel, earth with a sharp bitter grapefruit hop quality. Astringent hops! Finishes with bitter grapefruit, leaves and that acidic astringent sensation. Fairly heavy and creamy body is the best thing going on here. The way this is hopped is totally wreckless and has ZERO finesse. Bigtime clash between malt and hops. Go get yourself some Hercules to see how a DIPA like this one should have been.

Bottle poured a clear tarnished copper with a lasting ivory head. Aromas of pine resin, tangerine, orange Zest, light carmel and light earthiness. Palate was medium bodied and smooth with a dry finish. Flavors of piner, grapefruit, orange zest and light carmel with a smooth dry lingering bitter finish.

THOUGHTS: Really nice balance at first, then it got a little hop heavy near the throat. But still very nice. I was glad to see Sam Adams finally releasing this. Maybe one day they’ll make a DIPA of their own. Hid alcohol well until the finish. Nice, but nothing too memorable. TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured a cloudy, dark, brownish orange with a small to average, off-white head that mostly diminished, but left good lacing. The aroma was moderate caramel malt; moderate to heavy piney and resinous hops; along with slight alcohol, tobacco, and ever so slight vanilla. The initial flavor was bitter, rather sweet, acidic and salty; while the finish was more sweet, rather bitter, acidic and salty with a fairly long, but average for the style finish. There was caramel, pine, salt, citrus, toffee and tobacco. The medium to full body was a little syrupy, but also oily and then a little dry with fizzy carbonation and a light to moderate alcoholic and ever so slightly metallic finish.

Another really good longshot. Hazy and orange and a funky light tan head. Very nice appearance. Palate is chalky, with butterscotch, caramel, oranges and some hop resin in the distance. Nose is largely grapefruit.

Nice head, dark gold-amber pour. Sweet, malty, hop aroma, with some grass too. There is a full, sharp, hop assault in the flavor. Thanks, Mike! This bitter, rich brew borders on being a little too intense, which is unusual for Sam Adams. It is a little unbalanced for my tastes, but still a good IIPA.
