Commercial Description:
While there is a great malty foundation to this brew, Mike’s Double IPA showcases his appreciate for hops. In fact, he included seven different varieties of American hops, totaling over six pounds of hops per barrel. The hops add an intense floral and citrus aroma to this brew.

Pours hazy golden red with off-white head. Nice combination of herbal/grassy hops with resinous citrusy hops in the aroma. Slight roasty caramel and alcohol astringency also present in the nose. Tons of hoppiness in this one, with great oily citrus hops, some more piney hops than was in the aroma, and a bit of the earthiness. Some sweetness and roastiness in the malt, but it doesnt stand a chance next to all that hoppiness. Palate is a bit too sticky for my taste, but full and rich.

Bottle. Clear amber/orange color with a medium head. Aroma of tropical fruit, grapefruit, melon rind and enough caramel malt to keep things sane. Amazingly fresh and citrusy hops. If this were on tap (and maybe unlabeled) it would rank right up with the best IIPA’s out there. I don’t rate a lot of one-offs anymore, but this is one that should be considered for long-term.
High Hopes - I know. But what the hell, it worked for Troegs Scratch 4.

12 oz. bottle served in shaker- poured very turbid and cloudy darkened amber with heavy orange tints, 3 mm white head formed and laced very nicely. Extremely appealing aroma of floral, grapefruit, and grassy hops. Hits the mouth with a wide body, if you can’t find the malt- you’re a dumbass, hops come crushing in on your tongue, everything holds up just fine in the middle, finish is heavily acidic and can taste the resin as it sticks to your tongue. Very good- but what do I know.

The aroma nice and hoppy bitter grapefruit. Great looking beer. Bitter alcohol at first and gets better as you sip it. My mind jumps from beer to beer as I taste many different double IPA’s I have tried. It’s a beer vacation in my mouth. All the different hop flavors flow over your tongue at different times. Definitely not a copy. Very unique. The only thing would like is a little more sweetness. Epic beer.

Bottle. Poured a decent sized, frothy-rocky, off-white head with a bronze body. Super-heavy hop aroma of pine, grapefruit, orange and tropical fruit. A little malt comes through, too. Very hoppy flavors complement the body that is heavy in caramel malt. Medium, sticky, resinous body with average carbonation. Caramel malt sweetness and hop bitterness hang around for a while. I can’t shake the resinous goop off the back of my tongue. The alcohol is starting to come through, but nothing can burn the hop resin away. Feels like I licked the sap off of a pine tree. Overall a good beer, but way too resinous and goopy.

Had high hopes for this bottle since it was based upon Pliney. Lightly hazy amber in color with a lasting off white head. Aroma was very good with alot of citrus as well as piney hops. Taste started nice enough with resinous pine and citrus but quickly turned soapy and very bitter- the big crystal malt body didn’t seem to mesh very well with the strong warrior and chinook bitterness. I am thinking that Mike’s version must have been alot better than this BBC offering, as that guy is a really talented brewer.

Murky dark amber pour with khaki big bubble head. Nose of sweet caramel hop. Flavor is just amazingly balanced and very earthy and floral. What a good bitter finish. Terrific example of style.

(12oz bottle, courtesy of Swalden 28) Pours a lightly hazy orange body with a medium off-white head. Aroma of pine, earthiness, florals, grapefruit, and herbs. Flavor of hops (herbal, earthy, pine, grapefruit) and caramel malt.
