Commercial Description:
While there is a great malty foundation to this brew, Mike’s Double IPA showcases his appreciate for hops. In fact, he included seven different varieties of American hops, totaling over six pounds of hops per barrel. The hops add an intense floral and citrus aroma to this brew.

Abundant citrus nose packed full of grapefruit. Spruce and pine accents followed by thick malty caramel and bread aromas. Hazy golden orange/light copper color that sparkles in the glass. The head remains for the duration and is fluffy with a light khaki color. Heavy rings of lacing stick to all sides of the glass. This beer looks incredible. Full bodied, chewy and very bitter with a sweet, dry finish. I know I should slow down, but it’s so good and drinks with such ease, just figure it’ll be an early evening for me. Flavorful with layers of hoppy goodness. You taste the grapefruit and evergreen, but then a mixture of flowers and a biting green almost noble hop aspect enters the equation. A touch catty and very resinous. After the hop assault fades a hearty dose of fairly sweetened malts come forward providing a creamy caramel and biscuit taste. It’s juicy, pucker inducing, filling, and yes it’s even malty. This is a wonderful offering.

12 oz bottle thanks to 17thfloor. Pours a hazed orange with a beige head. Fresh grapefruit, floral hops, and a nice bready dough in the aroma. Medium body. Grapefruit, caramel, citrus, lots of lemon in fact. Bitter but somewhat tannic. The hops clash oddly here, maybe its just the state they are in. Decent though.

Pours a hazy, reddish-copper color with a moderately full, yellowish, pillowy head which is mostly diminishing and leaves minimal lace. Nose is interesting with dank being the first scent noted with also floral bouquet, tangerine, grapefruit peel, and some nice backing malts of toffee. Flavor is full of hop flavors and balanced by a nice malt backbone; malts are prominent in the beginning with toasted caramel, toffee, and biscuits. Hops filter in with notes of sweet tangerine, apricot, light resins, grapefruit peel, and light floral. Palate is medium, lightly sticky, lively, and drying into the finish. Finish finally shows the deceptive moderately high bitterness becoming a bit dry and noting more resins and light rustic notes. Not the typical IIPA I’m accustomed to but it was nice for a change. The initial smell was misleading, this one really turned out to be a decent beer.

First of all-don’t drlink a beer like this after having a Michelob Ultra Amber, the difference between no flavor to something like this could give you a brain aneurysm. Secondly this is a pretty decent Imperial IPA but not quite great.

Pours a hazed amber with a lasting off-white head. The aroma is sweet with notes of pine, lemon, pineapple, and tangerine. Biting bitterness greets the tip of the tongue at first sip which then mellows into sweetness and alcohol bite. Has notes of pineapple, citrus, and pine. Bitterness is a bit harsh. Syrupy and cloying as well. Tasty stuff and easily the best beer that I have ever had from Sam Adams.

Poureda hazy amber with a large white head. Aroma is really good, mostly of hops, citrus, and lots of spices. Taste has plenty of hops with lots of spices. Finish is smooth and much milder than the start. Not too much aftertaste. Really quite good.

This has an outstanding citrus aroma, orange and grapefruit. The head is creamy but the first sip is hop city. A very aggressive start that seems to mellow out quickly but then sustains long through the aftertaste. A slight bit of something funky near the end but pretty good stuff. Extremely hoppy.
