Commercial Description:
While there is a great malty foundation to this brew, Mike’s Double IPA showcases his appreciate for hops. In fact, he included seven different varieties of American hops, totaling over six pounds of hops per barrel. The hops add an intense floral and citrus aroma to this brew.

The Dan Journal #263. Tasted 4/6/09. 12oz bottle. The Pliney Clone. Hazy with a dark whiskey, honey golden hue. Bubbled off white head. Aromas of citrus, melons and berries. Full bodied with a very bright palate. This is really nice! The hop character and bitterness hits all points of the palate. Big bitterness. Really impressive. This is the best under the Sam Adams banner.

My bottle [12oz] shared with tupalev. Pours a slightly hazy orange with a huge lasting frothy off-white head. Slightly mild aroma of resiny, piney hops along with some tropical fruit and sweet malt in the back. Resiny, piney hop flavour, quite hoppy in fact, along with some alcohol and pepper -- borders on being harsh. Long, very bitter finish. Medium bodied. A pretty good effort, I enjoyed it.

Bottle. Copper pour with a tall, densely packed tan colored head. Thick, hoppy nose with big citrus notes, pine and a chewy malt and caramel backbone. taste is strong hops - both spicy and citrusy - with luscious caramel, sweet malt, and orange peel. Body is thick and the carbonation is dense. Lots of bitterness and enamel eroding hoppiness. Ends with more big hop notes, caramel, chewy malts, spicy notes and citrus. Very good stuff!

12oz bottle from Lukas Liquor. Pours hazy orange with white head. Aroma is heavy with sweet malt and citrus with caramel and hops. Flavor is spicy hops, with sweet malt, citrus, caramel and little pine. Finishes bitter and with a coying sweetness of the malt. Decent double but may be a little past its prime. This was supposed to be the Pliny the Elder clone but reminds me of Hopslam a little.

12oz bottle thanks to Joe. Pours a nice burnt copper. With a huge aroma of vanilla caramel and massive citrus. Quite bitter flavor with some big pine and spice notes. A little citrus. Finishes very bitter with some light caramel. Pretty damn good for the style.

12oz bottle obtained at Hannaford. Pours a hazy amber to near-copper body with over an insh of off-white head with a ton of off-white head. Orange, grapefruit, pith, mint, grass dominate the aroma with a fair bit of caramel to balance. Grapefruit, orange, lemon, lime, grass, pine, mint, pith hit the pallat with just enough caramel and biscuity malts to make this not a complete hop-bomb. I have not had a beer with so much hop character in quite some time. Ranks up there with some of the best hoppy beers of any kind I’ve ever tried. A hop-head’s delight. A well made well crafted complex beer.
